Monday
I can’t believe I’ve gone all summer and not come down to the beach when it’s only a 20 minute drive away.

And by that I mean the proper beach - on the sand, beside the sea - because sure I’ve been along the Esplanade for walks several times or sat in the car looking out to sea occasionally and we’re down here every Thursday for Lily’s swimming lessons - but that’s not the same thing. So when I came out of table tennis this afternoon, I realised with the sun out and a moderate breeze, conditions were perfect for a quick hour’s seat-on-the-sand and a spot of diary writing.

I have a special spot I go to right at the end of the beach where there are some rocks and it’s generally quieter. When the tide’s in, there’s usually still a tiny spot of sand there and I always have a notebook and pen with me plus the travel rug in the car - there’s a cushion in the back seat as well and I forgot to take it down with me today - and I can tell you my bum and back are protesting about that right now!

But it was just so nice and relaxing.

To my left -

To my right -

And straight ahead -

I suppose the fact I haven't been down is because of Nikki’s action-packed summer schedule (detailed in my last entry) which we’ve stuck to pretty well plus the weather just hasn’t been good enough to factor in a planned day at the beach any time. Not that I need the kids - I’m quite happy coming down on my own but I’ve had to pace quite a lot on the days when I haven’t been doing something with them plus catch up with my own stuff.

And although it was daunting when Nikki asked me to do stuff with them on Wednesdays as well as the weekends throughout the summer, it’s been useful to see how much it impacted on me healthwise. There have been a couple of times when it did get too much, especially if I did something on both a Saturday and a Sunday but overall it’s let me see that it might be possible to add another thing to the week for maybe an hour or two on a Wednesday or something.

Problem is it’s hard to choose what that something might be - at the moment there are four different things lined up which I’ve been wanting to do for a while now - but I can’t really do anything until I sort out what’s happening with the counselling - which you must be sick of me saying 'cause I’m sick of going on about it! Moves are afoot for the next step though although I was thinking today how easy it would be to walk away from it altogether - the ball’s in my court at the moment - but I don’t think I would ever forgive myself if I didn’t at least try to get back to it. It just seemed grossly unfair to get to a point where I was thoroughly enjoying it for 6 months and then have it all swept away from under me through something which was no fault of my own.

I do have a couple of back-up plans if it doesn’t work out because that's going to be really distressing so it’s important to have something else I can focus on right away to take the sting out so to speak if that does happen.

Saturday
The wee man rolled over for the first time when we were all here at my house last week and every one of us missed it!! He's been trying for quite a while now and we'd got used to him being 'almost there' so I got a shock when, while playing a game of Pairs with the girls with Ruari lying on the floor beside us, I suddenly realised he was on his tummy! Nikki had literally popped up to the loo for 5 minutes!

The girls go back to school on Wednesday. I'll miss them. We had one of our last outings at an aquarium in a seaside village, MacDuff, about 40 miles away on Wednesday - they've been there a couple of times but it's been almost 10 years since I've been there so it was nice to go back.

Here we are at the start - the girls are holding quizzes which Nikki had the foresight to make up for them to do while they were going round. It was impossible to get everyone looking at the camera at the same time!

Being silly.

And one with Granny in, reflected in a mirror on the ceiling - with apologies for my very rude granddaughter!

And my very favourite fish - just cheers me up every time I see one :)

Tomorrow we're hoping for some sun because we're planning the open air swimming pool in Stonehaven - a little seaside village about 20 minutes away. You folks across the pond will realise to brave an open air pool in the north-east of Scotland in August is no mean feat - Ruari and I are playing it safe and spectating instead!

If it's nice we'll sit on the right-hand side of the photo where the yellow bit is - I think that's some kind of seating - and if not we'll be watching the mad people in the building on the left :)

Cross your fingers for sun!🤞

Edited

you are a braver woman than I, going to an open air pool this summer, lol, you are actually north of me here and it's been far too cold to swim outdoors this year,

what great photos, your granddaughters are beautiful,

sounds like an full summer, hard to believe it's almost over,

have a great weekend!!!

Marg thesunnyabyss ⋅ August 18, 2019

Well we survived but as Nikki put it afterwards ‘There was no joy whatsoever in that experience’ lol. The girls loved it though so that’s the main thing!

Just Annie August 17, 2019

Fingers crossed for sun! Lovely photos!

Marg Just Annie ⋅ August 18, 2019

It worked thank you!

ConnieK August 18, 2019

GORGEOUS pictures! ALL of them!

Okay. It sounds to me as if you loved the counseling but your health interfered. Could you make that "one thing" a part-time return to your job? Not every day, but maybe 2 days a week?

I do not stick my big toe in a pool less than 80°F (26°C?). I'm spoiled! LOL!

Marg ConnieK ⋅ August 18, 2019

No unfortunately I’m unable to do anything for two consecutive days Connie - or for longer than a few hours on one day. However the counselling (which is voluntary) would be feasible because you only see a client for an hour then spend some time afterwards writing up notes. That I could do.
You would have hated the pool then - it was heated and we did have some sun but there was a wind as well which made it pretty chilly. I was very glad I was spectating!

How lovely to get to go to the beach ! It’s wonderful that you are feeling well enough to do more things with your family . Nice pictures ! Beautiful family !

Marg Deleted user ⋅ August 18, 2019

Thanks V - I should really have made more effort to get to it more often but I’m hoping there may still be some good days weatherwise this month - that may be wishful thinking though!

Deleted user Marg ⋅ August 19, 2019

Surely there will be more nice days left !

Marg Deleted user ⋅ August 20, 2019

Apparently we’re in for a heatwave next week - I’m not placing any bets though :)

Deleted user Marg ⋅ August 20, 2019

I hope you get nice days , not a heat wave . Today we are having storms. You know how much I like them :-)

Marg Deleted user ⋅ August 21, 2019

Oh no! Stay safe! And our heat waves would be nice days to you over there - they’re talking about temps of 30 degrees - that to us is a heat wave :)

Deleted user Marg ⋅ August 22, 2019

Our heat waves are 95-100 F and it’s so humid that it’s like walking around in a sauna. That is how most days have been unless it’s storming. :-( I swear Illinois weather is the pits !

Marg Deleted user ⋅ August 22, 2019

OMG I'd never survive those temps!

Deleted user Marg ⋅ August 22, 2019

It’s hard to stay motivated to get much done outside . :-) All good intentions usually crash and burn after an hour :-(.

mcbee August 18, 2019

3 beautiful grandchildren....a beautiful family picture.

Marg mcbee ⋅ August 18, 2019

Thank you! I often think Lily looks a little bit like Abby so I was really interested in that recent photo you put up of her - I could so see my wee scamp turning out like that :)

Beret August 18, 2019

What lovely pics! Beautiful family. I love seeing your seaside!

Marg Beret ⋅ August 18, 2019

Thank you!

Purple Dawn August 18, 2019

It looks lovely at your beach :)

Marg Purple Dawn ⋅ August 18, 2019

It really is - I should make far more use of it :)

JustSurviveSomehow August 18, 2019

Very nice pictures! Even the one with your granddaughter's tongue out ;). She looks to be thoroughly enjoying herself! Is that a string ray, also?? I've never seen one from underneath before. I hope that you are able to get back to the counseling too, as it is clearly very important to you and something that you really enjoyed.

Marg JustSurviveSomehow ⋅ August 18, 2019

Yes it’s a stingray - a baby one I think - they’re just so cute and always look so happy!
I hope so too - I trained 20 years ago and did 3 years open-ended addiction counselling which I think was quite daunting to go straight into newly trained. There was just something about it which wasn’t sitting right but it was almost like I knew it wasn’t me (although I totally blamed myself at the time). Then 3 years ago I did a refresher training course with a local agency and began working there and bingo! It was run totally differently and I found myself thoroughly enjoying myself so realised what had been wrong and I’d found my niche. Six months into that I became seriously ill and became bedbound for months so that put an end to virtually everything. Hopefully I can get back to it eventually :)

noko August 18, 2019

I so hope the counseling gig works out for you energy wise because clearly you are very good at it. That combo of sun and wind and warm but not warm enough water is familiar to me from my childhood. It is such a great experience for the girls but I am glad to read you were able to retreat to a warm place with such a handsome grandson. I am really interested in the muscles we use to roll over and how the spine changes as we learn to. A milestone for sure.

Marg noko ⋅ August 18, 2019

I am absolutely fascinated by how babies learn all they do and it seems in such a relatively short time! And just their tenacity as well - they never give up no matter how hard the task seems :)
Thank you for your kind words re the counselling :)

Sabrina-Belle August 19, 2019

When I lived in Bognor with my mum I sometimes went ages without going on the beach, now I really miss it, your special spot looks nice.
Love the photo of Ruari, he is so cute.
The baby stingray is cute too!

Marg Sabrina-Belle ⋅ August 20, 2019

I think when you know things like that are easy to get to you never make any special effort to get to them!

Kristi1971 August 19, 2019

What is the best time of year to visit?

Marg Kristi1971 ⋅ August 20, 2019

Sorry you’ve lost me - do you mean visit Scotland?

Kristi1971 Marg ⋅ August 20, 2019

Yes! :) I'm trying to plan for 2020.

Marg Kristi1971 ⋅ August 21, 2019

Oh right! Well summer probably but the weather’s so hit and miss it’s hard to say - you’d have more chance of seeing some of the beauty in the sun though so June/July would probably be the best time :)

Kristi1971 Marg ⋅ August 21, 2019

Thank you! 2020 is still up in the air....contemplating the Olympics, but at the same time, my mom and I have been talking about England, Scotland, and Ireland....argh.

Marg Kristi1971 ⋅ August 22, 2019

Bet the Olympics will win! :)

Kristi1971 Marg ⋅ August 21, 2019

Thank you! 2020 is still up in the air....contemplating the Olympics, but at the same time, my mom and I have been talking about England, Scotland, and Ireland....argh.

MageB August 20, 2019

What fun. Even if it has been a bit too much, you sound vastly better this year than last. Hugs from here.

Marg MageB ⋅ August 20, 2019

Goodness yes you’re right there! :)

NorthernSeeker August 21, 2019

I love that photo of you with the family! Those outings look like a blast and the kids will remember their fun grandmother. It's good to hear that you're feeling up to another activity midweek. You sound great...seems like you've had more fun.

Marg NorthernSeeker ⋅ August 21, 2019

It’s been a good summer - nice to spend so much time with them :)

Serin August 30, 2019

The mirror shot is the best of them all!

Marg Serin ⋅ August 30, 2019

🤗

Ferret Mom September 02, 2019

Such great pictures! It's funny to me that that is what stingrays look like on their underneath side.

I live close to Lake Michigan (I mostly go there for long walks) and have been horrible about getting over there this year. But then I went twice this weekend.

Marg Ferret Mom ⋅ September 02, 2019

Haha I know what you mean - I was back at the beach last week so that's twice in 2 weeks for me too! :)

edna million September 30, 2019

That... stingray?? is hilarious- it looks like a happy cartoon creature! And yes, VERY cheering. Ruari is absolutely adorable - that hair is just the best. And I looooove your beach view. How fortunate to have a beach so close by, and a not-packed one at that!

Marg edna million ⋅ October 01, 2019

I know - I’m so lucky - and don’t use it enough - although it IS Scotland so we’re kind of lacking the compatible weather to go with it!
