Summers of Yesteryear in Scottish Meanderings

Well that ear pain was absolutely horrendous and got worse, much worse, before it got better. Turned out it wasn’t an infection at all - it was literally just impacted ear wax - I say ‘just’ but my God the pain was so bad not only did it have me frequently in tears, it completely stopped me sleeping as well - I went a whole SEVEN nights with absolutely no sleep whatsoever.

When I saw the doctor on the 5th July (I got a cancellation), I’d been dealing with it for a month by then but she said she couldn’t see enough to diagnose an infection so all she could do was give me ear drops to soften the wax then make another appointment for the following Friday and it might (MIGHT!) be cleared enough by then to see what was what.

I actually broke down at the thought of another week of that pain so she prescribed me strong painkillers (which didn’t even touch it). That night it intensified and the second I let my head loll back even just a milligram it got worse. I can tell you now it’s impossible - even sitting upright - not to let your head relax when you start to drift off. So for the next seven nights I watched the most complex films I could think of and found series about horrific things which would keep me alert while I tried to stay in an upright position. By the time the second appointment came round I was almost delirious and was ready to chop my head right off!!

I was terrified the wax hadn’t softened enough because there hadn’t appeared to have been a lot come out in the interim but she said she could see a big dollop just sitting there and if I was up for it she would go and get tweezers and try and get it out! Not a recommended course of action I don’t think but she felt it would relieve a lot of the pain if it worked and certainly what she was getting out was rock hard stuff like tiny pieces of stone. It seemed to get worse at first but then that evening, after the next lot of drops, I also got a lot of the same hard stuff out and things started to improve considerably after that.

I still wasn’t right though - I was off my food, felt grotty, was still in a lot of pain and couldn’t sleep on that side for a good two weeks after that - it’s only really in the last week that it’s been better and my right ear is still occasionally blocked. I have an appointment with the nurse at the surgery to get both ears syringed in September though so hopefully that’ll be the end of it.

As you can imagine the whole thing completely knocked me off my stott and I’m desperately trying to catch up with everything. The car MOT ran out at the end of May, it needs booked in for a service first, and the insurance ran out on the 6th July so all that has to be sorted pronto. I was also half way through a long e-mail for my counselling manager before it happened because the supervisor I was working with has left the Agency so the manager is taking over where she left off but needs brought up to date. So apart from that having to take a back seat, I was thrown at how much that pain debilitated me and kept thinking how would I have managed to commit to weekly sessions with a client with all that going on?

I sometimes wonder if my body struggles more with things like that now because it’s having a daily battle just to get through a day anyway so something extra which invades it may have a much bigger effect than if I was healthy. I don’t know - the jury’s still out on that one. Does make some sense though.

Determined the kids were going to have a fun summer, Nikki created a spectacular table of activities at the start of the school holidays which she sent to me because she wanted me to participate in some of it (mainly the Wednesdays and Saturdays or Sundays). It was actually quite handy to have it visible so that I could see what was coming up and what I’d need energy for but it also meant I was doing extra stuff during the week (usually I see them all on Thursdays and Saturdays) and I think just that extra day may have had some impact healthwise.

It did make me think of summers long ago though. I doubt very much if my mum would have (had she been able to) created such a timetable of activities for me at the same age - I imagine my poor sister (7 years older) was delegated to keep me amused a lot of the time thereby ruining half her summer I’m sure! And when I was older it was very much the norm to take off on the bike for whole days, exploring, with no adult having a clue where I was and returning only at teatime. And then long hours playing out in the street or the back garden in the light evenings with neighbouring kids.

Another favourite place was the local swimming pool - again we could spend the whole day there - this was before there were regulated times - and I vividly remember one Sunday morning convinced I’d gone blind because I couldn’t open my eyes. I’d spent the day before in the pool and the chlorine had crusted over my eyelids and hardened as I slept so that they were literally stuck together in the morning!

If it was raining we would go to the ice rink and spend hours in there or the cinema - again you could watch a set of films (always at least 2 in those days) over and over if you wanted - there was no-one to check up on you and throw you out. And if the sun shone there was a brilliant park about 20 minutes’ walk from the house with a paddling pool, putting green, tennis courts, playpark and lots of green space. To get to it I would have had to cross at least two extremely busy roads (not to mention walk down a very lonely, isolated lane) but I can clearly remember walking down there myself on many an occasion then I would call for my friend who lived just beside it and we would spend hours there. Or we'd go explore places, rollerskate round the streets or climb trees and see who could get the highest.

I don’t know how we’re all still alive :)

Despite the ear pain, I was pleased that I didn’t have to cancel anything with the kids although I had some pretty hairy days where I had to grit my teeth to get through them but nevertheless we all went swimming together twice - Ruari was a bit nonplussed with the whole thing but he was so chilled the first time we went that he actually fell asleep in my arms for a good 20 minutes! The girls found some good hidey holes to pass the time while Nikki got him dressed (the place was closing that day so no-one needed the lockers), and I was glad they did because it reminded me that I'd forgotten to retrieve my pound from my own locker!

to the circus - and Nanna Jane came too which was nice - due to Nikki’s shenanigans we hadn’t yet been anywhere where both grannies have been present although I was kicking myself for not sitting beside her - she was a bit isolated at the end there - but it was just the way we ended up going in,

Lily sat enthralled the whole way through.

Lilah on the other hand asked Jane 15 minutes into the performance "Has it started yet?"! And Ruari very impressively managed to nap through some of it :)

met my sister who was down for the day with 2 of her grandchildren. We met at a playpark at the beach and I was marvelling at how many years we’ve had fun at that playpark although it’s changed a little bit since I was a kid. I used to come down to Aberdeen for a couple of weeks to stay with Mum’s sister who was childless but just adored kids and there were certain places which we made a point of going to - that park was one of them. Because it was at the beach we combined it with a trip to the swimming pool which was there at the time (gone now) and if it was nice enough, a picnic and an ice cream on the beach itself before travelling back to the house on a double decker bus, sitting at the front upstairs because it had a huge wide window so had the best view (and so's Uncle Charlie could have a smoke). Halcyon days!

So between the 4 of us we must have been going to that park for over 50 years - and then of course I took Nikki and all her cousins when they came up for a holiday - and now the next generation are getting just as much fun out of it. Value for money I’d say :)

At the left is my sister, Lorna, holding (or trying to) her grandson, Robin, his sister, Roseanna, me holding Lily’s hand, Nikki giving up on trying to get Lilah into the photo (because she was throwing a strop at the time - that's her walking away, pissed off that we were having to leave the fun to take Lily to her swimming lesson), my niece Catriona holding her son, Matthew (and with Baby Number Two in her tummy). Catriona’s brother Craig was also there but was taking the photo. The park's in the background on the left and the beach is across the road on the right.

On sunny days, we spent some of them in Nikki’s new back garden - she’s recently had it all landscaped with new grass and paving stones (and I realised I never took any photos of it).

and had a few days in my front garden, sometimes with the girls, sometimes just Nikki and Ruari when the girls have been at Joel’s,

He really is her Sunny Side Up baby :)

Today we had a rare sunny day so she was trying out a new paddling pool and Ruari just loved it!

Tomorrow she’s trying a new plan whereby she’ll take Lily to Codonas (the permanent funfair we have down at the beach), leave Lilah and Ruari with me then swap round and take Lilah, leaving Lily and Ruari with me (I stay about 20 minutes drive from the beach) to give her some one on one time with the girls. That’ll fairly task the energy barrel for me so I just hope I last out!!

Next week is the University Zoology Museum unless it's good weather - if it is we'll go to the bike park instead - and the following one is a splash park in a town about 50 miles south of Aberdeen - that one will need good weather too so may well be subject to change but we’re hoping it comes off because Lilah gets her jabs that morning so it'll be an ideal carrot to wave when the tears start! We’re also hoping to get to a rather wonderful aquarium in another town about 50 miles north at some point - I wouldn’t mind joining them for that as it’s been a while since I’ve been there.

And how ridiculous is this? I bought more Vitamin D3 yesterday and the contents literally cover about an eighth of the bottom of the bottle - what a waste.

Just Annie July 30, 2019

Sorry about your ear. My father had to have his ear wax removed a couple of times a year, it would build up so quickly.

When I was a kid, the only official summer program we would sign up for was the reading program at the library. Otherwise, we entertained ourselves by riding our bikes, playing outside (kickball was one of our favorite games), playing board games on long, hot afternoons and reading, of course. We were 'free range' kids and would return home by dinner. How did we ever survive?

Marg Just Annie ⋅ July 31, 2019

I know it's amazing isn't it?! I know folk looked out for each other a lot more in these days but there must have still been dangerous characters around - I don't remember hearing of anything awful happening though.

Adventure before Dementia July 30, 2019

That is one helluva ordeal to go through with earache. I think it's worse than tooth ache. I had mastoiditis as a kid, but apart from that I can't remember what I used to get up to in the holidays!

Marg Adventure before Dementia ⋅ July 31, 2019

Lots of mischief no doubt :)

noko July 30, 2019

Oh gosh. I am so sorry you went through all of that. It sounds exhausting. I know after I had my ears cleaned out for the first time I never ever take ear wax for granted anymore. So glad you were able to finally get some relief. We never scheduled anything for summer when I was a kid. We played outside on our own all day. It is so different now for kids. That is an intense chart there but very creative and it looks like you all are having some excellent days together.

Marg noko ⋅ July 31, 2019

Yeah I'm kind of glad she did it although I worry the kids will come to expect to be entertained at this level all the time. Also it's expensive doing all that stuff! It was a lot cheaper being kids in our day :)

thesunnyabyss July 30, 2019

wow that ear pain ordeal sounds awful, I'm so glad to hear it's better now,

sounds like a lot of good things going on, it's such a happy, family filled entry, very awesome,

so nice you can all enjoy that park for so many years,

have a great day!!!

Marg thesunnyabyss ⋅ July 31, 2019

Thank you!

ODSago July 30, 2019

I've had similar ear problems...I mean never never had wax removed before I was 77, when my husband used to need it fairly regularly from age fifty on --used to bewilder me. The pain was intense , plus I had infection...so I read about your siege very sympathetically. I love your photographs of the family. Wish mine were around more--lots live nearby but...schedules and such are endless divergent. I miss family get togethers so much. That summer schedule was a really creative idea by the way. Loved too reading about your childhood summers. Take care.

Marg ODSago ⋅ July 31, 2019

I do think myself very lucky having them so near and of course Nikki being a single mum probably means I get to see a lot more of them at times like the holidays - if she had a partner they would likely be doing much more as a family so that works in my favour too :)
Apparently a build up of ear wax is another of these lovely things we have to look forward to when we get older - something to do with the body producing less fluid - and some folk are more prone to it than others. Old age is SUCH fun don't you think??!

ODSago Marg ⋅ August 02, 2019

Oh, yes. Our body has these little tricks to play on us, ones that we didn't know existed.

ConnieK July 30, 2019

I'm glad to hear that Nikki's attitude is changing. The other grandma must have been thrilled.
You've been through the wringer on the ear pain. Make sure you flush them regularly. Glad the pain finally abated.
My meds now come in 90 day counts. Instead of filling ONE bottle with 90 pills, they gave me 3 bottles with 30 pills each. So wasteful.
Your memories jogged my memories. We came home for supper when the street lights came on. :)

Marg ConnieK ⋅ July 31, 2019

Yes I'm hoping Jane and I can get together more often at things like that. We text each other occasionally but it all has to be done in secret at the moment!
That waste is crazy - seems to be everywhere these days.
I'm glad I provided a bit of nostalgia for you :)

Mystery July 30, 2019

That trampoline looks fun!

Marg Mystery ⋅ July 31, 2019

They had a ball on it!

^..^Kat July 31, 2019

I've never personally done this, but have you ever had your ears candled? It's supposed to help immensely with wax build up.
Your pictures are so good, cute kids!

Marg ^..^Kat ⋅ July 31, 2019

I’ve never heard of that - off to Google it!

Marg ^..^Kat ⋅ July 31, 2019

The first two sites I tried said quite categorically that it was unsafe and didn’t help at all. Do you know anyone who’s had it done?

^..^Kat Marg ⋅ July 31, 2019

I've only known one person that has done it, but she was extremely happy with the results. She did discuss it with her doctor and was told that it wouldn't hurt her and that she was free to try it.

Marg ^..^Kat ⋅ August 01, 2019

That's really interesting - worth looking into then!

JustSurviveSomehow Marg ⋅ August 01, 2019

I actually use to do it several times per year, but then I forgot about it, since ear wax is not a big problem for me. We did it as kids because my mom did it, so we had to be involved too, obviously ;). But you can definitely tell the difference after you do it. My favorite part is cutting what's left open afterwards and looking at everything that was pulled out.

Marg JustSurviveSomehow ⋅ August 01, 2019

I'm a bit put off by what I've read about it this morning so it's encouraging to know it works!

MageB July 31, 2019

I am so sorry about the ear pain. What a horror story. But what a beautiful family you have.

Marg MageB ⋅ July 31, 2019

Aw thank you!

JustSurviveSomehow August 01, 2019

That sounds awful. The thought of not being able to sleep for seven days gives me anxiety for you just imagining it. I get a little loopy when I'm going 20-22 hours without sleep, so I can't even wrap my mind around that. They probably would have had to commit me.

I did the same things during summer as a kid. Parents were gone at work, nobody was around, and they only cared that you were home in time to eat dinner. I occasionally will take my godson for a day, and the second we aren't actively doing something super stimulating, he goes, "OMG I'm so bored. Can we just go home so I can play video games/watch Youtube?" NO! Grab a stick and figure it out! Self-entertainment has really gone by the wayside.

Marg JustSurviveSomehow ⋅ August 01, 2019

It's kind of worrying isn't it?

I was freaking out a bit myself - googling things like 'how long can humans go without sleep?' - just the sort of info you want at 3 a.m. when you're totally sleep-deprived!! :)

BaybNJoe August 01, 2019

Wait..Nikki has 3 kids? Wow!! Lilly is BIG!!

I'm sorry about your ear. Ear pain is one of the worst, in my opinion. I'm glad it turned out not to be a serious infection, though. Small favors, right? Hugs!!

KT

Marg BaybNJoe ⋅ August 02, 2019

Yes I’m not overly thrilled about the way she’s gone about getting them but I must admit I’m secretly pleased to have 3 grandchildren at an age where I can still get some enjoyment rom them :)

kmh. August 01, 2019

Wow, Ruari has grown so quickly!!! What fun you have all had, so nice to see :)
I'm glad your ear is feeling better, so sorry to hear you have been so unwell with it though.

blackpropaganda August 02, 2019

I get my ears checked regularly now - not least because I have hearing aids from Specsavers and they provide a free check - although to have it taken out costs there. Glad it got sorted anyway - and as for summers long ago - innocent times

Sabrina-Belle August 02, 2019

So sorry to hear you've had such an awful time with your ear. It sounds horrendous.

I love Nicky's chart, she is a great mum. I didn't do anything like that with ours, but we were in the country. They just ran wild a lot of the time, in the fields and the local wood, where they weren't supposed to go. Cat used to steal bluebells around the time of her birthday and we put them on the party table. Chris was always off on his bike with a friend and Tony had a friend he used to go to stay with for days at a time.

Like you, I played outside a lot. There were fields 2 streets away and we used to go there and fish in the brook, or walk along the river to the weir. I have wonderful memories. I also lived in a huge pub with an abandoned wing, a second floor of empty rooms full of junk and a club room big enough to roller skate in so when it rained my friends came to me!

Lovely photos! It looks as though you had a great time with your family.

Marg Sabrina-Belle ⋅ August 02, 2019

How wonderful (the floor of the pub) - that would have suited me right down to the ground!

edna million August 02, 2019

OMG, how AWFUL--- I'm so glad it's finally finally better, but can't imagine going through such ear pain for that long! I'm sure it's set you back a bit as far as energy goes.

We never had prescribed activities either, and spent most of our summer days just wandering around with the other kids in the neighborhood. Or, in my case, reading! I feel sorry for kids now who don't just get turned lose to wander. Even my brother's kids didn't wander like we did, and they live in the same place we grew up -- and the oldest is in her mid 30s now so that's been quite a long time ago. I love Nikki's chart, though, and they'll have lots of great memories of summer too, free-range or not. Your park sounds wonderful. We used to go to a picnic area/campground on our Blue Ridge Parkway, which is in a national park so was remote and wild, but had tons of hiking trails. It was SO much fun, and when my cousins visit we still try to go up there for a picnic.

Marg edna million ⋅ August 02, 2019

One of my favourite things to do on summer days was climb up on our shed roof and read. It sloped down at the back - it was quite big as it was a sort of summerhouse/playhouse and there was another shed for coal adjoining it - it was tar sheets which covered it and I just loved that smell in the heat - plus the sloping roof meant I wasn’t visible from the house (unless someone looked out the bathroom window) which was handy :)

NorthernSeeker August 03, 2019

I had an earache when we first moved to Victoria...almost drove me crazy. Now that you know what caused it are there any preventative measures you can take? Nikki and her family are looking good. You had good summer days when you were young and your grandkids are going to remember great days too.

Marg NorthernSeeker ⋅ August 03, 2019

I don’t think so apart from regular use of drops to keep softening the wax - a messy business. And maybe regular ear syringing.

Serin August 06, 2019

As long as it's yesteryear and not yester-ear. Glad you got unplugged. My doctor's yelled at me a few times so I put in some drops every so often just to keep from getting to that impacted point.

The kids in the locker made me laugh out loud. Charming photo. And how cool you have a place that's such a family tradition.

Also, that's a gorgeous little boy. :)

Oswego August 13, 2019

Enjoyed your reminiscing about summers long ago. Those were the golden months in my childhood. We played outdoors all the time and were very inventive and creative.

Enjoyed also the photos.. Some very joyful pics! Made me smile! 🙂

Marg Oswego ⋅ August 14, 2019

I'm so glad I grew up at that time😊
