It's awful.
I have no farmers in my family, but my granddaughter is in 4H. At the Oregon state fair this year, the vanishing family farm is all anyone talked about. It cast a pall over the fair.

It happens all the time. It's always been this way - like small corner groceries going out of business. Get bigger or get out. But this time there is a whole set of reasons making it the perfect storm - did the article say that?
There is man in twitter Jeff McFadden who wants to go back to animal power. I don't think that's the answer but his ideas are distracting at least.

My property is in what is called the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) here. The Provincial Government is now sticking it's nose in and trying to tell us what we can do on our property. We cannot have second homes on it and the houses cannot be over a certain size. They have a list of approved usages for the properties. It is so annoying. People are fighting it and protesting, I'm trying to stay under the radar and ignore it. It's probably the wrong thing to do but I can get away with it on my land as my brother can let his cattle graze on parts that I don't use. I hate that they are trying to control the small farmers. Hate Hate it!! I wanted to subdivide part of the property (10 acres) for one of my girls. Of course that is one of the things that they changed, nope, can't do that now. Oh damn, now I'm wound up and annoyed. LOL, Take care,

Unbelievable that they get to tell you what to do with your own land:-(

This is very disheartening to read so I can only imagine how difficult it is to live it. Are you going to try anything new on your farm?

Beret December 01, 2019

My family there in your state said this has been the year from hell. And they just finished harvest not even a week ago because of the weather.

So sad to read this.

Marg December 02, 2019

That’s very sad.

Jinn December 02, 2019

I have been seeing that headline a lot lately . My Grandparents were small farm dairy farmers and I know they frequently struggled .

The more things change the more they stay the same. It seems like this kind of farming has always been difficult but the appeal is strong to us humans to have our own land and grow what we can. It is all clearly being reimagined in a way that is sad for so many. It is hard but we adapt. I think about #MeToo. It is hard for men to change but they need to. Still...

I suppose it is a bit like Me Too. Little choice, it's what happens. To quote the great philosopher - it is what it is.

WhatDreamsMayCome December 02, 2019

It is a tragedy.

It seems just unfixable.
