The Brain Fog Slowly Lifts in Everyday Ramblings

Most likely by the time you read this we will be home.

What a joy it has been to get away. Even for a few days. To look out different windows at different vistas. To feel and experience the fresh ocean air. To be with my closet family in the same room for hours at a time. There is much to be grateful for here.

I can’t think too of a better cat sitter who has much experience with cats that are having a rough patch. Not only is she giving him the prednisone but offered all on her own to give him the B-12 shot.

We brought enough food to last us twice as long as our stay so have plenty of variety and don’t need to go to the store.

This year there are many more people here than usual, no surprise really with kids not going to actual school and parents working remotely. Why not go to the beach if you can afford it? Of course, our rental only opened up again last month and we had to attest to our health.

Although we have been assiduously avoiding the news the fact that our state had the highest caseload count ever yesterday did not escape us. Even though we knew this was coming, it is alarming.

There are way more surfers here too. I guess if you are not going to bars and clubs you might have enough resources to buy a full wet suit and a stand-up board.

We are cooking as a team. This morning for lunch we made the roasted cauliflower with a tiny bit of bacon, parmesan and olives with a touch of lemon juice and cumin seed that was so popular in the New York Times a few weeks ago. We are having a Mushroom Strada for dinner.

I miss the cats but at the same time having a few days away from the care is a welcome reprieve.

We spent hours yesterday working on how to make hybrid documents with drawings using the Apple pencil and editable printed text in Good Notes so that I could draw individualized yoga practices. I suppose in some ways it would be easier to make a video, but one can get so tired of all the little verbal tics on a video. I know when I watch and follow along on Walk at Home videos, I turn the sound down and listen to podcasts. Leslie Sansome has quite the laugh.

Having a page to follow along with, you can do it at you own pace and I think it is easier to memorize. Not that I encourage my students to repeat movements over and over again. Changing it up is good for everything. But you do want to make sure the basics get covered as we all have favorite grooves to move within.

My leg is still being problematic. I think I might spring for some physical therapy so I can have a trained person watch me move and see if we can figure out a plan. In the meantime, I am learning how to manage it and live with it.

Then if that doesn’t work if I can afford it, I will splurge and book private consultations with a movement specialist. For now, I can still walk and do my own yoga practice (within limits) and teach and those are the important things. I am sleeping okay. I truly would like to know what is causing it though. More that just, oh you have degenerative disc disease and arthritis…

Most folks out here that are not hang gliding or doing water sports have dogs. It is so much fun to watch these incredibly happy dogs run around and play with their people. And the kids that run for the sheer joy of it.

There is a guy with a radio powered car toy, an adult guy I might add, that seems to be enjoying himself.

We brought carrot tops, and in an hour or so, I will go out exploring to see if I can find a wild bunny or two to tempt. We saw deer on the way in. When Most Honorable finishes grading, he is going to go hike up the small mountain sized dune we can see from here.

Kes is taking a nap.

We are all remarking on how good it feels to be away from Zoom even for a couple of days.

Long explanation for that is when discs degenerate, bulge, hernate, or dislocate, they leak fluid that irritates and inflames the nerve, but maybe you already knew that.

If you have a disc issue, one thing I swear by is getting right out of bed and walking upon waking up, but maybe you already do that? Fluids in the body naturally collect at the lowest point, and as we lay in bed, that is usually the back. This, on top of what your disc might be leaking. Walking gets the fluid moving around and out of the spinal column. I've had more than one doctor and physical therapist say that standing up and just walking around the house for a few minutes when you first wake up is one of the best things you can do. It works for me, at least, though I miss just sitting on the edge of the bed for a moment contemplating what I would do if I won the lottery and didn't have to deal with an alarm sassafrassin' bricken-bracken...
