Work ish in Self-Improvement, 2018

Writing this on my phone, so I can’t guarantee the proofreading will be there. Not that I usually proofread anyway.

It’s been a crazy week at work. I’m covering for our payroll chick who left on vacation Wednesday. Had slight upheaval yesterday. With about 30 mins left in the workday I got a very panicky call from a coworker in one of our New Mexico offices. She had an ex-employee berating her on why she hasn’t received her final paycheck yet. Her termination was involuntary and in the state of NM, if you’re involuntarily terminated, your employer has 5 days to give you your final check to remain in compliance with the law. She was terminated on 03/29. We were out of compliance and the payroll chick had made no mention of this persons termination before going on vacation.

I logged into our payroll software and looked her up. It looked like payroll chick had her final check set up to be directly deposited into her bank account NEXT Friday (which is our pay date - we do payroll biweekly). When I saw that my immediate reaction was that she set me up for failure. She has been doing her job more years than I have mine, she is well aware of the New Mexico payroll laws. When I called her to ask what she knew about this employee/why she had her pay to be directly deposited WAY beyond the compliance timeframe, her response was an unapologetic “whatever. She can wait.”

So that was end of the day Thursday. I was the only one in the office because my supervisor was gone. I told the panicked coworker in New Mexico that I could get the direct deposit stopped and prepare her a paper check, but Supervisor Who Was Not In would have to review it before I could print it (through Google Cloud Printing so that it would print in NM) So printing in NM would have to be delayed until this (Friday) morning. Plus, the banks there would be closed at that point on Thursday anyway.

This morning I had two missed calls and an IM waiting for me, all from three different coworkers in NM asking if I was ready to print. Supervisor came in late. By the time he got in I had already fielded a few more phone calls about the check. Eventually Supervisor did come in and reviewed it and I could print it, and I legit kid you not, 2 minutes after I printed it, I got an IM saying I printed it just in the nick of time because ex-employee had just appeared at the office unannounced to pick up her check.

So the moral of this long-winded work-related boring entry is that I finally finished revamping my resume, and I applied for one Staff Accountant (my current title) job with a different company.

My theory is this: apply for one job once a week for jobs that would be worth interviewing for. They don’t have to be dream jobs. The thought is that eventually I’ll get called in for an interview where I can get comfortable/practice my interviewing skills. Then look for the dream jobs. Unless one of these jobs pays decently and appears better in person.

There is no pressure to find something new quickly. It’s a perfect time for me to miss a couple hours of work here and there because I can blame it on divorce-related appointments and no one will be ballsy enough to question it. And I have roughly 330 hrs of PTO accrued. If I have to cover someone’s 1.5 week long vacation and I haven’t been given all the necessary in-compliance-with-law info, I deserve to be able to take a few hours off here and there. But don’t tell my family I have that much vacation time.
