everyone has at least one person in their life
one special person in their life
one important touchstone of their existence
who they want to ask the question
who they need to ask the question
but they will never ask the question
and the question is this
“why ain’t we fuckin’?”

not in a crude way
not in a harassing way
just in a matter of fact way
you ain’t fuckin’
I ain’t fuckin’
we seem to get along okay
why ain’t we fuckin’?
matter of factly
why ain’t we fuckin’?
just plainly exactly
why ain’t we fuckin’?
I’m a big ham and
you’re one fine mcmuffin
life lasts only so long
why ain’t we fuckin’?

not romantically but
not unromantically either
could be romantic eventually
could rise in intensity
or might not
just two people who could get the other
more or less reasonably hot
life’s short and brutish
take the comfort you got
two decent people sharing a cot
and maybe there could be more sometime
and maybe there might not

you all have that person
at least one
where you and him or her both
know you should ask each other
that question

maybe you’ll fall in love
maybe it’ll just be a good time
maybe it’s even your boyfriend
maybe it’s even your wife
but at least one person
probably really more than two
it’s the question hanging for the ask
but you never ever do
“why ain’t we fuckin’?”
and you know it’s true
and you know it’s true
and you never do

Usually, acceptable social convention is the answer to that. Although why anyone cares about that, I will never understand.
