4 hrs Of Sleep in The Kid Used To Dream

I didn’t get to bed until 4am Thursday morning - don’t ask..

I woke up around 9am and was bombarded by a barrage of do this and do that …call this person and can you handle this personally.. (what did I hire you for?)

1pm couldn’t have come fast enough. Summer basketball with the team I volunteer for. The guys get a change to play against public schools. The truth is we aren’t going to win, but the reality is that it prepares them to compete in their league that no one ever plays public schools.

I get to be more of a mindfulness assistant. The HC has 20 years of paid experience and brought me on to help center him and the guys.

I’ve been a volunteer coach for almost 20 years. He’s been an employed coach for that long. There’s really not much difference other than he does break the game down into tinier pieces than I do. I try to get them to center themselves and be present in the moment and see the entire floor. It’s my second year as his assistant. This year I’m going to be more of an example of being in the moment. Like today, there was a moment where he needed to take one of the starters to the side and explain something. I noticed that the team on the floor got lost without him joystick coaching them, especially one of our guys. I stood up, subbed out one of the weaker players because he was so lost. He initially got subbed into the wrong position. When I switched out the players they seemed to run on autopilot until the HC took back control. I got up and went to guy I subbed and said - that’s on us. You were out of place and I didn’t take you out for making a mistake - I took you out to save you from what you didn’t know. Boy, don’t you wish as an adult there was someone looking over your shoulder and pulling you to the side to save you from yourself? I said to him - you’ll get called back in and I’ll make sure you play your normal spot.

HC never knew what was going on and never asked. That’s when you know the team is coming together.
