God Bless America in The Things I Write When My Mind Won't Sleep

Check one two
Check one two
Can anybody hear me?
I said can anybody hear me?
I SAID can anybody HEAR ME

I guess not
So I will speak into the silence
And raise my voice
One
Twice

I will make the choice to keep talking
Keep screaming
Until the microphone turns on and so do the lights
Until the billion wrongs start to look like rights

It may be impossible to win this fight after
Restless days and sleepless nights
Spent in the goddamn town that’s turned in to a cage

I have to stifle my rage
And sit quietly
Silently
Holding my tongue

Until a woman can become someone
And not be sleeping to the top

Until I can marry my wife and have a priest at the ceremony

Until a man with AIDS won’t be locked up by his government and told he is dirty

Until a black child can play with nerf guns on the street and not get shot

Until a person born in poverty can have just one single shot

To make it.
In this twisted environment.

Ignoring men’s tears and women’s cries
Stamping down on free speech
But have our guns held high

God bless America.
Land of the free
Home of the brave

What a mockery we’ve made of this phrase
