So last Friday I got an email from my daughters school saying that she was a close contact to someone that tested positive for Covid. A few hours later, I get an email from my sons daycare (he goes to AM Pre-K and then is transported to daycare for the afternoon) saying that he was exposed to someone ON TUESDAY of last week. That child had only attended daycare on Tuesday. At my sons school they wear masks, but they take his mask off at daycare (and there are some maskless employees there too). The notice from daycare said something along the lines of, “your child cannot come back to daycare on Monday without a negative covid test”. So…Saturday night he randomly was lethargic and asked to go to bed before dinner. Completely out of the ordinary for him. I tucked him into bed and he went STRAIGHT to bed. Sunday morning he complained of his head hurting (this from my 3 year old with speech delay). I took him into Immediate care and guess what? POSITIVE. Overall, he’s been doing really well. The first few days he had his moments of feeling ill and wanting mommy. He threw up once or twice, but overall he’s himself and playful. I’ve quarantined him in his room, so my daughter and my mom have both been sleeping in the living room. He’s got toys, tv, tablet....I bring his food in to him on the TV tray and he has his potty. I have the air purifier on high and I make him wear a mask when I come in and out of the room (I also wear 2 masks when going in), but I’ve made sure to continue to give him endless hugs. I mean, I was already exposed right? I also take him outside to play so that he doesn’t feel so isolated. I have the bedroom door open, but a baby gate up so that he can’t just come out and roam as he pleases. If it weren’t for my high risk mother being here, I would just let him roam the house.

Since my daughter was exposed at school, her school is supposed to test everyone daily, but they really just tested them Sunday for Mondays school day. She tested negative and then they sent an email saying there’s a Covid testing supply shortage and that they’re only going to be testing certain people. I sent her school and email practically begging them to test her daily because this is our only way of knowing if she’s positive from her school exposure or home exposure, but they said until they get the supplies, they’re only testing symptomatic people. The same with the place where I had my son tested. You can only be tested if you have symptoms.

My mother and I went to the school district where I work to be tested since we’ve all been exposed. My test was negative and hers was positive. I was heartbroken enough having her here and my son being positive. She wears a mask in the house anyways, but she’d been wearing two masks and a face shield since my son was diagnosed and I went out and bought her some gloves to wear around the house and she’s been eating separately from us since my son was diagnosed. She still got it. She has a chronic cough anyway and a lot of allergies that mimic covid symptoms anyway, so for her right now (and I pray it stays this way), she feels normal.

I scheduled an additional Covid test for myself later this week in case I end up having it. I’m going to schedule one for my daughter through the school district I work for as well, just to be sure before the weekend.

It’s a crazy world we live in these days. Can’t catch a break!
