The proposal in In other news

I can’t remember whether I had written about joey asking my dad about us getting married. It was way back in April. He was super nervous, which is ridiculous given that we live together and are soon to embark on ivf. I’m pretty sure my dad doesn’t want me back!

So since then, obviously I have been dropping hints about the kind of ring I’d like - helpfully I’d sent a few links and he chose one of my picks. And we’ve been joking about when he might ask etc, it’s been like fun for all the family. Our guess was that he would ask on holiday, we go away in a couple of weeks, and that was his original plan.

So, the ring arrived last Tuesday, but was being held at the post office. He was up at the crack of dawn on Wednesday, which I thought was a bit weird, but then joey is a bit weird sometimes so I didn’t pay much attention to it. He popped out to pick it up while I was in the shower.

He was being strange all day, and I was texting him from work asking why he seemed really depressed and wasn’t he happy, that I was worried about him, that we had so much to look forward to in the coming months and he didn’t seem to be looking forward to any of it. He kept insisting he was fine. Obviously I now know he was absolutely fine, just super anxious because he had the ring!

When I came home from work he said he was going to take the dog out, so I said I would put tea on. Nothing unusual about any of this so far, it’s pretty much our bog standard routine in the evening when we’re both at home. I had told him to be back for a certain time so tea didn’t spoil. When he wasn’t home I rang him like where are you, tea is going to be ruined, and giving him a bit of a hard time! He said he would be home in a couple of minutes. Again, he often starts walking and doesn’t realise how far they’ve gone or how long it will take to get back so I didn’t really bat an eyelid other than being mildly irritated!

I had my back to him as he came in, I was literally putting tea on the plates, and when I turned round he had champagne, flowers, and the ring, and was like I need to ask you this now. He did a little speech about how much he loves me and although he didn’t get down on one knee, he did cry, which was amazing!

Like a fool, I just kept saying oh my god, are you actually doing this now, and he had to actually ask me if my answer was yes or no! He did say afterwards that he wondered for a minute if I knew what he was getting at!

It was not at all romantic in the typical sense but very romantic at the same time in that it was probably absolutely perfect for us! I had joked with my friend the week before that if he asked on holiday, it would probably be when we were hot and sweaty after rowing on the lake rather than when we were looking nice for a night out!

Considering I knew it was coming, I was 100% shocked. I had known he was planning on asking on holiday so I definitely wasn’t expecting a random Wednesday night proposal! Needless to say the champagne was opened, followed by wine, and I was not very productive in with the next day! It’s amazing how long it takes to get anything done when you’re newly engaged, staff and patients wanted to know the story, how it happened, see the ring - I’m not allowed to wear it for work but did that first day. It’s horrible taking it off, it hasn’t been on long enough.

Everyone has been so sweet and giddy and excited. Even now, a week on, everyone is so excited still. I’m ready for a couple of weeks of detox before our holiday, everyone wanted to celebrate so we drank on our own Wednesday, Thursday I went to my grandmas and had a wine, Friday we went out with my parents, Saturday my bestie was home from Norwich for the weekend so we went out, and I’ve been working the whole time too. I am exhausted, and so glad we’re away soon. Really looking forward to just relaxing. It’s lovely that everyone wants to celebrate but I did ask joey if he couldn’t have waited til I didn’t have to go to work for a million shifts!

He actually asked on the Wednesday cos the nerves of trying to hide the ring for three weeks, and trying to get it to holiday and hide it there, without me finding out, was too much. He said that’s why he’d been weird all day, he was having kittens and the ring wasn’t even in the house! And to be honest I’m glad because it did catch me off guard, and now I can just enjoy the holiday and meeting up with my family, and brother who I haven’t seen for two years, and celebrating. I think had he waited to ask on holiday I’d have been on pins waiting for it.

So I am now an engaged lady!

Xx
