Health Update in Day by Day

I am pre-diabetic. My number is 5.8. Cut-off is 6.0, according to the doctor. So I’m going to try to lose some weight and watch the extra sugar.

I am dangerously low on Vitamin D, so I will be taking a weekly prescription: 1 time per week for 8 weeks, then I call in at the end of that regime and they’ll repeat the process. It starts today.

I don’t understand the Vitamin D. I eat a LOT of fruit and veggies and I live in Florida, where you can’t avoid the sun.

I like the wisdom that comes with age, but these health issues are the pits!

Do you drink milk? Milk has Vitamin D and calcium for your bones. I am trying to promote milk for the good of the dairy farmers.

ConnieK woman in the moon ⋅ August 17, 2017

I LOVE milk, but think I'll increase my intake. Hopefully that'll make the dairy farmers rich. LOL!

Jim's friend, the big dairy farmer, says it's been close to two years since he's made a profit.

ConnieK woman in the moon ⋅ August 17, 2017

In-laws in MI run a big dairy farm. They're successful but it isn't easy. We've had some interesting conversations regarding hormones/vitamins/antibiotics. I've learned a lot!

The price of milk has gone down a lot - I don't have the numbers in my head but it is a market like anything else and I suppose it's been overproduced. Even organic milk which sells at a premium is overproduced and is selling for less than it did.

I was going to say eating veggies is so good for us, but I do hope you get it settled asap! My boys were pre-diebetic and they lost the weight, I guess as we get older our bodies sure likes to play with us.
I wish you luck!!

ConnieK Wranglingal ⋅ August 17, 2017

Thanks for the encouragement. From what I read just now, fruit and veggies don't give much Vitamin D. It comes more from meat, eggs, milk and sunshine.

Chic Chat August 17, 2017

Sending you good vibes that all these tips and tricks work. Getting old isn't fun.

ConnieK Chic Chat ⋅ August 17, 2017

I have a good support system here. Thanks for your part in that. :)

Shattered August 17, 2017

My dr. told me 20 mins a day of sun.

ConnieK Shattered ⋅ August 17, 2017

I'd burn to a crisp in the FL sun in 20 minutes! We're closer to the equator here, so sun damage happens fast.

GypsyWynd August 17, 2017

Ironic to have a vit D deficiency and live in FL.
Amen to your last sentence!!

ConnieK GypsyWynd ⋅ August 17, 2017

Sunscreen means you don't get enough Vitamin D, but if you don't use sunscreen, you could get skin cancer, so there's no winning.

GypsyWynd ConnieK ⋅ August 17, 2017

maybe just a few mins outside sans sunscreen? Eat more salmon? Drink milk?

QueenSuzu August 17, 2017

I agree that the health issues that we wise ones in age have to deal with are the pits! Add to that, if you don't use sunscreen you can get skin cancer, but the sun is good for vitamin d--can't win for trying!

ConnieK QueenSuzu ⋅ August 17, 2017

Crazy, isn't it? I started the mega dose vitamin D tonight.

I take both calcium (calcium citrate, which is absorbed better than calcium carbonate) and Vitamin D3 because the anti-cancer meds I'm on thin my bones. (I now have osteopenia.) I get my D levels checked regularly.

I always say I'm an original model and the parts are wearing out. Sounds like you're on the right track!

Reading_Blankie 📚 August 19, 2017

oh, I completely understand with the health issues! Sometimes it's like, "Well, I can't do that anymore!"
I hope you don't get to a point where you have to prick your finger. My momma hates doing that :)

ConnieK Reading_Blankie 📚 ⋅ August 19, 2017

I don't know that I WOULD do that, so I'm hoping the same. Thanks. :)

Reading_Blankie 📚 ConnieK ⋅ August 19, 2017

She's been diabetic for years and FINALLY, we just told her that she needs to do it. Though, she is not really one to take care of herself and do as she was told. Sounds like you've got a plan on what you need to do though!!!

ConnieK Reading_Blankie 📚 ⋅ August 19, 2017

Right now I'm on mega dose of vitamin D. We'll see if that works. I'm in limbo right now. I don't want to address anything until I am fully on Medicare. Switching from regular insurance to Medicare in the middle of billing will mess things up, so I'm trying to avoid the headache altogether.

Reading_Blankie 📚 ConnieK ⋅ August 19, 2017

I hear you. I'm disabled. I remember one year my work took me off of their insurance because at that time they were screwing me over and having me work less hours(daycare job). It was such a mess getting everything sorted out. I think I discovered this when I went to get my pills and the payment was over like $100 or so. I was livid and it took FOREVER to get everything all settled.

Nice pic of you and the Grand Canyon. :) Live here and have only been once.

Ferret Mom August 19, 2017

I'm sorry.

But at least you are one of those people who is good at managing/staying on top of things. You'll make good choices.

ConnieK Ferret Mom ⋅ August 19, 2017

Thanks. You are sweet to say that.

Marg August 22, 2017

You definitely can't win with this ageing lark!

Bird of Paradise September 25, 2017

That is crazy that you live in the south and eat lots of veggies and yet you are low on Vitamin D. I live in Phoenix for 4 years. Walked the dog several times a day. A year after I moved to Wisconsin I was told my Vitamin D was very low and I had Osteoporosis. I remember the dr making comment as in questing... "Didn't you just move from Phoenix?" It must do more with people's body systems. Also I think most women are low in Vitamin D after Menopause. I am in the norm range now, although I don't take Vitamin D supplements. I get my Vitamin D naturally and/or from a Vitamin D lamp (not to be confused with a sun lamp).

ConnieK Bird of Paradise ⋅ September 25, 2017

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a Vitamin D lamp! I kind of wonder if low vitamin D is the new thing now...like gluten-free was a few years ago. I've read that most adults start to lose Vitamin D as they age, but yes, I was surprised because not only do I eat lots of veggies, I eat deep green veggies: broccoli, spinach, etc. and a lot of fruit.
