Liking meditation so much that I’m now reading a book on Buddhism. And I wanted to write these notes down for myself. Take what you will from them…

Caring for all beings, even those you don’t know - makes you happier and those around you happier. Everyone is equally deserving of care and help from suffering without expecting a favor in return. Help and caring should feel natural, as you would want someone to help and care for you; and as you should care and help yourself. But you can’t treat everyone like your child, your best friend, or your mom. It’s not socially acceptable.

Not caring for others makes us feel alienated from everyone. You are just like everyone else, and everyone is just like you - in different life situations. Reach out to others just as if they were you; see yourself in them. This brings good karma.

This is a hard attitude to have. You must work at thinking this way, getting rid of judgement and biases. Each person you meet is an opportunity to share kindness.

Don’t put others above yourself and care for them because of how you see them, or what you expect of them, instead of just for who they are. Don’t expect from others but this doesn’t mean be cold, aloof and cynical. Hope that others will be kind but don’t expect it from them. It may not be their fault that they are not kind to others. You don’t know what is going on in their lives, keeping them from their own happiness.

Don’t cling to anyone, or depend on them for your happiness. Everyone is a lesson learned, this alone should cultivate affection towards others - even those you don’t know. They are all there for you to help , even if all you can offer is a warm smile.
