Daughters in Background

We were getting ready to go out to brunch on Sunday and my mom and my sister were in the kitchen talking. I was in the bathroom, which is right off the kitchen. They were essentially just waiting for me to get out of the bathroom so we could leave.

I don’t think they knew I could hear their conversation, but I heard my mom ask my sister if she knew where I wanted to go to eat. She referred to me by my male name. My sister responded, “She didn’t say anything to me.”

My mom said, “She. That’s right. I have to remember to call him ‘she.’“

I thought it was interesting that she used both genders in the same sentence.

My sister said, “It’s all in how you think about her. If you think of her as a girl you will naturally use female pronouns for her.” I liked how simple it seemed when she explained it like that.

I walked out of the bathroom and my mom said, “Are you ready, sweetheart?”

I know that you can refer to boys with the term “sweetheart,” but my mother never has called me that before, and I liked that it seemed feminine when she said it.

I told her I was ready and she said, “We haven’t done this in a long time. I’m really looking forward to brunch with my daughters.”

That made my day.
