The Pattern in The Kid Used To Dream

There has been a pattern of criticism that has ultimately made everyone an expert in everything.

I think it started with American Idol and Simon. Simon’s blatant honesty made some people angry but I think it weaponized some folks. Some folks saw the attention he got and decided they too were a musical expert. They would criticize everyone and didn’t care who they hurt - and sometimes they didn’t know their asses from from a crawdad hole. That bled over into politics, religion, psychology, weather, sports - you name it.

I have a friend who’s an attorney. He’s so flipping rich that he only lives in the US 6 months at a time to avoid taxes. He lives in a British controlled island in the Caribbean the other 6. Since I’ve known him he’s been a self proclaimed expert about something. At first, it was amusing and funny to listen to him logically break down episodes of the Bachelor or a football game. Now, he’s just annoying. He’s constantly posting on social media what’s wrong with the current administration. While he does hit some truths some of the times - for the most part I want to ask him when he got his high level security clearance and his invite to the situation room since his ideas of military strategy are so much more superior than the people in charge.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t disagree. We absolutely should. However, tearing down someone in criticism when you don’t have a clue as to how they arrived at their decision is reckless.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been sitting in a waiting room and someone talk about a music artist. They tear them down and they never met them. And as far as knowing music - they reveal that ignorance pretty early in the conversation.

I was doing the front of house sound engineering at a gig on Saturday night. One of the singers in the group that was doing sound check wasn’t hardly singing. I’ve ran sound for them before and he does the same thing - barley sings during the soundcheck and then sings loud during the show. So, I had him just in the mix. This old know-it-all lady said - we can’t hear you.. and you most certainly could.

I guess the moral of this story - it’s okay to disagree, just don’t be a self proclaimed expert if you are in fact no expert!
