her mouth contained
pomegranate stained
teeth and secrets
mostly well-hidden
but there occasionally
a flash of brilliant red
or a hint at some wisdom
even the gods themselves
held in abject jealousy
punishing her for that
greatness beyond gods
barely tucked up away
behind a tight smile
that could have been genuine
that could have been sarcasm
could’ve been a defensive reflex
because most wisdom is wisdom
but all power is violence
and sometimes you have to
hold your tongue and lips
to survive in presence of
powerfully-violent fools
like executives and gods
and other made-up giants
other confidence frauds
whose only true words
were always threats

pomegranate stained
teeth and secrets
was her name Eve
maybe Persephone
maybe even Tiresias
if only part-time
or was she your
daughter your
sister your
mother

maybe she was all of them at once
forced to hide those traces there
of her hard-earned wisdom’s fruit
because you can’t use it for good
if you’re beaten to death
by some entitled godling
or a business douche bag
or whatever he call them
whenever we are now
