The first three days of my new job were interesting. Day 1 was during a heatwave, and I had to leave my car at the bus terminal and walk all over the base sweating my guts out. I was met at the door by one of the guys, and he showed me around. I met the big boss. I met my boss, and the others. So far the people seem nice. We’re a small unit, 6 guys, I’m one of two women, though the other woman is on maternity leave. They’re trying to hire a 9th person but that is taking time.
It was a Wednesday, so originally I had packed to go to crafting after work, but they let me go early (to do admin), so I got back to my car in time to drive home, have a freezing ass shower, and actually cool down before heading to crafting. I sweated my guts out there, too.
Thursday was a “normal” day. Mostly trying to get access to the different drives and mailboxes and programs I’ll be using. IIRC they sent us home early. By us, I mean there are two of us in the position I’m filling, he’s the lead, and he’s been very helpful getting me up to speed (I’m nowhere near up to speed), but we’re sort of the junior members so they let us go early sometimes.
Oh, but I got a cool new title. I’m an “Aerospace Coordinator” these days. That feels pretty badass to me. I’m definitely learning a lot more about what we do as an organization than I ever did in the 7 years at my previous location.
On Friday because it was a long weekend, they punted us well before lunch. It was fantastic. I was worried with my new schedule and travel time that I’d never get to go to the stained glass store again (because it closes at 3:30pm), but I stopped by on Friday on my way home to pick up glass for a new project (the Mugello track over an Italian flag) for M.
M and I spent the weekend working on the greenhouse (we finished digging the trenches for under the bottom plate, and then installed the bottom plates themselves), I’m finally at the stage where windows can start going in). We spent time hanging out in the Catio, watching shows and movies (we watched the original Blade Runner in 4K, and then we watched the sequel), and of course banging.
It was Red’s birthday yesterday. On Monday evening we all got together at a local pub and ate and drank and played card games. Our tradition has been out drinking the night before and then spend the afternoon at the beach the next day, where I would bring a literal cake, which we would eat with our hands. But there were calls for thunderstorms on the 1st, so I brought the cake to the pub and we ate it with our hands there instead haha. We did end up at the beach anyway, the thunderstorms got pushed into the evening, ruining the fireworks for people. I got a sunburn and aside from it making me hot, I’m not mad about it. I want more sun this year. I just don’t want to die of heat exposure. We didn’t get to swim, it was just a touch too cold. Next time, I’m sure.
I have fought anxiety and intrusive thinking about work all fucking holiday. I’m looking forward to this new existence becoming mundane. I’m told there is a lot of downtime, which means I can finish my personal development stuff.
OH!!! Did I mention? I got accepted for (partial) funding for a Masters!! I’m looking at Leicester University’s Human Rights and Global Ethics course. I still need to figure the whole thing out, its supposed to start in September, so that should be interesting.
That’s it for now. Bring on the weekend!!
