Friday afternoon I set out by myself to sit in with band at a friend’s request. They hired me to play keyboard for the night and after driving two hours the venue forgot the keyboard promised so I wouldn’t have to haul mine. No biggie - already there may as well grab a guitar and sit with the backline and get paid. Then, I find out they really wanted me to sit on electric drums (hate those things - not as much as the wooden box {cajon}). Their regular drummer was in an accident and has some issues but continues to play but can’t hold out for the 3 minute set - but apparently my presence on the drums gave him a supernatural boost of energy. The venue has a second set designed to accommodate his disability. So, he’s on his kit at the side of the stage and I’m on the kit on the main stage. All night long my job was to play around him to keep him on time, which was difficult but at least he was able to play. His attitude as a musician is horrible. Every mistake he made was someone else’s fault. I just kept thinking - at least he’s out here doing what he loves despite his disability. They had me singing backup and at least they hired one of my absolute favorite singers. So the good vs bad plus pay and tips along with a meal- wasn’t a bad night.
Saturday our crew did a show with 3 other bands. Nothing to write home about but it’s always fun to be a fan until your number is called. One of my qualities is to encourage others that are just starting out and not be an egotistical prick that others were to me all those years. I even got to try out some comedy and hit a home run!
A quick show Sunday night that turned into a long night. We drove up to an accident in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no cell service. It must have been pretty bad because they kept the road closed long after the ambulance left. Somewhere a family is either grieving or thankful - we couldn’t figure out the outcome.
One show left tonight with a ton of office work this week to get ready for the next adventure.
The extra work is keeping my mind off some things that’s been bothering me. It’s causing me to have weird dreams. I must have been in deep REM because I remember the faces and in my dreams knew the faces of the people I was interacting with. Maybe something good will happen this week that I can report - until then I’m focused on the next job.
