Being offered a promotion was not on my bingo card for today.
I got a text from the Assistant Director asking if I had a minute to talk. When she called me, she told me that someone had said I was good at graphic design. No, I’m just half decent at Canva. I explained. Then she asked if I was tech-savvy. I also explained that I was not. Then she asked if I wanted to be the Communications Director. I will get back to her about that at the end of the week.
I interviewed for that position two summers ago when they had an open house. Being half decent at Canva was not what they were looking for. The previous CD was my buddy. I think I would be half decent at his job because he kept gassing me up. I did everything myself. He helped me become a wizard on Canva, but I designed our webpage, our flyers, brochures, and wrote all my own posts for social media. Everyone made fun of me. That’s so demure. Now they understand what I am doing and call it what it is, polished. However, he was miserable. He was spread so thin. He did not have a team. Head office put him through it, so he quit. He went to school and had the background for the job. I do not. This would be career suicide.
It doesn’t look good that they’re so desperate to hire somebody just like that. They’re in a rush, clearly. I don’t want to be filler. They would fire me to replace me. I will ask about a probation period that I can get in writing. If I don’t like the role, I want to go back to my old one. That is the only way I would consider it. Maybe I could be a temp until they find someone qualified. They would have to keep my position open. I do have so many ideas for the Communications Director role, too. Assuming HR doesn’t monopolize me the way they did the last guy.
At the end of the day, I like my bubble at the organization. I like my team and the kids in my program. I prefer to be a frontline worker. This isn’t so soul-crushing. I am land-based training this week. I lost my V-card today. My vegan card. I was skinning animals, removing fur, and tanning hides. Deer, elk, caribou, and moose. We walked over to where they do Sundance. Our part-time mentor is a sundance graduate. He talked to us all about it. We were invited to watch the next one. Also, we were invited to the warrior dances they do some Friday nights. This is for men, they dance the entire night.
