How do you spend the festive period, and what’s your favourite and least favourite thing about it?

Before M I didn’t like holidays. My mother’s family was way to high stress to be able to enjoy things. Inevitably my grandmother would get upset about something, or someone would make a comment and someone else would take offence. There was always some sort of fallout. It’s not like the *presents * part of the day wasn’t lovely, but that always rubbed me the wrong way.

When I met M (literally on Christmas Day) we had an entire year before we spent Christmas as a couple. When it started approaching I told him my opinion and he was like, “No. You’re not allowed to dislike Christmas”, and for the last 15 years he’s been making my Christmas merry and bright (gag haha).

As close to Nov 12 as we can manage, we get the outdoor lights set up. Between then and the first weekend of December we decorate the house. On the first weekend of December we get a fresh tree and decorate it. It will stay up until just after New Year (we don’t celebrate the January holidays, though our friends do).

We are basically hedonists at Christmas. When we used to drink we had ALL of the Christmas boozes. We spent most of the holiday lightly drunk (except for when I had to work). Now it’s select Christmas boozes and all the weed treats we can handle. We ALWAYS blow the budget. Sometimes we do a no-gift Christmas, but there’s always something to enjoy. Advent calendars, Christmas Eve Pj’s, a beautifully prepared meal (turkey in a bacon suit, mashed potatoes and pie at the very least). Lots and lots of Christmas movies. And when New Year rolls around, we have a tradition of “Fucking in the New Year”, which is exactly as fun as it sounds haha.
