this is the life you get
hunting for socks and belts
when you don’t even want to be awake
but you still have to be awake

this is the life you get
there are no servants or
hand-maidens or foot-men
but that’s a good thing
it’s better that so many
don’t have to suffer so
you can have it easier
it is better this way
even though it doesn’t
feel like that right now

this is the life you get
you’ll never meet a spaceman
if there are even spacemen
light’s speed is merciless
it would take your ashes
ten thousand years to
get to alpha centauri
and there wouldn’t be
anyone to salute your
remains anyway

this is the life you get
if there is a God at all
She’s certainly on lunch break
maybe it’s still Day Seven
up there in the heavens
after six straight days of hustle
I can’t even blame Her
it’s just self-care
good for Her

this is the life you get
belt on and socks up, baby
the only one with any chance
of making this place any better
is you, just you, only you
get to it
