The box doth overfloweth in Suggestion Box

OK, the first two suggestion box entries are getting seriously full due to the sudden burst of new users. So please add your suggestions here.
Before you suggest it, here's the most popular items already on the docket:
Friends only privacy (this will be a separate list from bookmarks)
User search box (this wasn't as high of a priority when there were only 100 users)
Bookmark manager, bookmark latest entries grouped by user
Thanks everyone, for your enthusiastic vote of support! It's a bit overwhelming when the population starts jumping by 100 per day! It's getting harder to keep up and reply to everyone personally at this point. But I'm here, I'm involved, and things will only get better.
Rock on Prosebox!!!

I'll just say those are all great and imma just going to write.

First of all, massive massive squidgy thank you for the sensible comment formation and for a bookmark list that doesn't just show the most recent entry per person only - it's nice to be able to see a history to catch up on! The only way I can think to improve upon these luxuries is to allow you to click "reply" to the comment from the comments page instead of clicking through to thr entry, and for the bookmarks to perhaps allow the option of viewing a collation of recent updates per person as well as a timeline. So if you clicked to a "by person" view, entries you hadn't read would be tallied by a number of unread, then a click to reveal the titles in a dropdown menu perhaps? Similar to the way Bloglovin works.
My main suggestion is perhaps controversially a "please DON'T do this" rather than please do. Can you leave the site as being completely restricted to the format that you eventually choose rather than allow people to change the colours and backgrounds and suchlike? It might sound strange because I changed almost everything about my OD, but I know that people find it annoying that I write in white on a black background, just as I find it annoying that they type on a patterned background or have ridiculously large comic sans text etc... I think it would give you a better brand identity to have a consistent format, but it will also be a better user experience for everyone too xXx
simple mind Etoile Filante ⋅ August 07, 2013
Yeah, inline comment replies are also on my to-do list because it would be so ridiculously efficient. :)
And I'm glad there are people on board with the clean look. I might offer some very limited customization options at some point, but not things that would sacrifice readability or the current responsiveness to various device sizes. :)
DivineNature simple mind ⋅ August 07, 2013
I would love limited customization options but agree with the above about it getting too crazy
Life Is For Living simple mind ⋅ August 07, 2013
I must agree with the clean look of the site. I quite enjoy it! & these comments & replies? Love how they are so much more interactive! My biggest gripe was the security & you have worked amazingly on that. As you mentioned having a Friends Only privacy is my biggest "want" right now (& being able to see who bookmarked us.) Fabulous work! :)
simple mind Life Is For Living ⋅ August 07, 2013
By the way, you just left me my 1,000th comment. High-five!

Third yay on keeping the white background/black sans serif font look.
Rick ⋅ August 07, 2013
No suggestions from me now. Just saying I'm glad the site is doing well and is looking to improve. No need to reply personally to this comment; you have enough to do. Rock on! :)
imp ⋅ August 07, 2013
First, I just want to deposit a yooooge THANK YOU! Second, I'm lovin' the third bullet as the current bookmarks are throwing everything out there and I can see that getting out of control in a hurry. The only other thing that's coming to mind immediately is a standard text editing section at the top of the box when making entries (I'm sure there's a proper names for that and I'm failing at remembering it. WYSIWYG?) as opposed to code. I'm an artist. Code makes me weepy. And finally, back to first: THANK YOU!!

I suggest that we bestow upon you a name. That other guy on the other site was the Diary Master. I think that we should call you The Prose Pimp.
simple mind hoops ⋅ August 07, 2013
I already dubbed myself the Prose Lord, but Pimp does have a nicer ring to it.
HisPuzzlePiece simple mind ⋅ August 07, 2013
Hoops has started a campaign for the prose pimp to be your official title... I recommend submission :)
Florentine ⋅ August 07, 2013
It's probably been suggested, or is even on your ever-growing checklist, but a way to move entries between proseboxes would be awesome sauce! I mean, I know I could just copy, paste, and delete, but I now have comments on an entry I'd love to move into a different box and I haven't found an option to do so.
Thanks so much for all of your hard work and open communication!
simple mind Florentine ⋅ August 08, 2013
Ah yes, an entry manager! Also on the list. Especially now that there's book privacy levels... need a way to reorganize!

Oop, yes. At the book level. Sorry! Still getting the hang of the slang! :)

I just have a HELP question: I actually don't understand how to read through my Bookmarks. Eg, back at the old place, you could simply see a list of your bookmarks and view title of latest entry in date order. But here, when I click on "Current Author", "Current Book", "Current Bookmark"... this just confuses me. I don't know whose entry I'm looking at in any of those tabs. I think I only have 1 active bookmark atm ~ is it just a matter of having more active bookmarks, for it to make sense? TIA.
simple mind Deleted user ⋅ August 07, 2013
There's the book icon in the top menu bar which gives you a list of the latest entries of users you have bookmarked (currently there's not a listing grouped by user like on OD but I plan to add that). On the entries themselves, those tabs you mentioned are used for navigation to next/previous items in that category. Here's an entry in my Tips and Tricks book that should help:
http://www.prosebox.net/entry/158/navigating-via-tabs/
Deleted user simple mind ⋅ August 07, 2013
Thank you so much - I hadn't taken too much notice of the Bookmarks Icon, doh!
Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
Being able to add some colour (personality) to our Proseboxes would be good in the sense that this gives us the ability to create a picture in our heads about the person we are reading and getting to know. I find that when someone chooses a blue & flowery colour theme, it adds to their personality and when I'm halfway through reading their long entries, I can never forget who I'm reading ~ because their colours and their personality is right there. When someone uses difficult colours, I just highlight and read. I assumed most people would do that too? Anyhow tangent. The fact is: A little personality to splash on our pages would be cool.
Ada O. Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
I agree. I wish I could customize the colors on my page. If you want to prevent people from using garish color combinations, you could give us just a few preset themes to choose from.
FitLadyDi ⋅ August 08, 2013
On my laptop the written posts and comments only cover the left side of my screen. All nice and neat, but just half. I'm using FF. Is it this way for everyone? THANK YOU!!!
simple mind FitLadyDi ⋅ August 08, 2013
Yeah, that's by design. I might change it to be centered so it doesn't look askew - either that or find something useful to do with that space on the right. I just like restricting the width of the text column; the wider it gets, the harder it is for your eyes to track between rows.
northern lights ⋅ August 08, 2013
I'm glad the bookmarks one is there! Thank you! :)
Kate ⋅ August 08, 2013
Would be nice to have navigation buttons at the bottom of the page (after comments). Either a "back to top" or the same as the top navigation. :) Keep up the great work.
simple mind Kate ⋅ August 08, 2013
Yeah, another suggestion I've had and noticed the inconvenience. Will definitely be adding that.
Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
I would prefer the members only privacy setting to allow our entries to be displayed on the main page. I want the community to see what I post but I don't want the whole internet to see it. I seem to be in the minority with this though, so maybe there could be an opt in to appear on the main page? Just feels wrong that to hide myself from the rest of the internet I also have to hide myself from our own community as well.
Also, the lack of some sort of 'what you see is what you get' editor is what's stopping me writing here more often. I don't want to spend ages trying to format my entries the way I want them cause I don't have a good grasp of html. And that's coming from someone who has at least some grasp on html. It's just too faffy.
simple mind Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
Was meaning to get back to you on that. I agree that it makes more sense to show Members Only on the main page if you're logged in. Once I get Friends Only in place (which won't show there), I'll fix that. For now, it kind of works to give people a little more privacy who want the friends only option. Not perfect, I know, but it will change.
And there's probably enough support for a WYSIWYG editor to look at adding that as an option as well.
Deleted user simple mind ⋅ August 08, 2013
Awesome news. You rock, keep up the good work :D
Deleted user simple mind ⋅ August 08, 2013
I second the suggestion that Members Only entries appear on the front page. Make a WYSIWYG editor an option, because I actually prefer the way you've got it set up right now, and won't use the editor.
simple mind Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
Oh yeah, I love the plain text box and using Markdown. Super easy for me also because it's a convenient way to put in the "let me show you this code without it converting it" gray box. So that will be an optional setting if/when a WYSIWYG editor comes to PB. :)
Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
I suggest that the front page show authors who have recently updated rather than entries, to prevent a single author from flooding the front page with 20 entries.
simple mind Deleted user ⋅ August 08, 2013
Yeah, someone else mentioned that. Good idea.
history of love ⋅ August 08, 2013
Thanks for making a nice, clean looking site - works fab and is very readable on a mobile - I could get used to this :-) Consider this another vote for some colours etc but not loads so it makes your head hurt.
What about some circles that people can join or groups like UK or Canada etc or 20's and so on? Tags? I quite like tags :-) although I guess that's sort of like the books but even so you could have different tags for entries. Thanks very much for making this site - it works great from a mobile so I might try to update here more (as that is mainly what I use and it's not great to update/note etc on OD from a mobile - even on the mobile site!)
history of love ⋅ August 08, 2013
Oh and it might be helpful if in an entry such as this - lots of notes and replies that the green lines -.maybe the author one could be in an another colour instead of 2 double lines or different reply feeds i.e replying to 1 person and then another in 2 different colours...not explained very well but hope you know what I mean!?

You know when you click "open your prose book" and it takes you to all your books. I was thinking it would be pretty nifty to have a way of putting in an introduction under "this prose book contains number books", so that users can get a little read on the diarist behind those books. Just an idea. =D

Nitpicking here....but what about a "random entry" link that would bring you to a random entry from a random diarist, to help find new people to read?

Flame is Love Sagittarienne ⋅ August 14, 2013
I was just coming to suggest a random button. Especially as the site gets bigger.
whybee Sagittarienne ⋅ August 14, 2013
oops, i just re-suggested the random entry thing.
HisPuzzlePiece ⋅ August 11, 2013
One suggestion I have just thought of although I'm not sure if you have already heard this or thinking of it. But I think it would be great if you could bookmark specific books rather than authors. So say for example, if I want to follow someone's fitness book but not their poetry I can do, or vice versa. Certainly not a priority but I e noticed a few users post multiple times in multiple books and take over my bookmarks list.
Thank you for all the effort you're putting in, I love this site.
simple mind HisPuzzlePiece ⋅ August 11, 2013
Yeah, that's how bookmarks originally worked, on books instead of users. But with the popularity of multiple books, it was difficult to keep track of new books and keep them all bookmarked. So I moved the bookmarks to the user level, with the future plan of allowing users to exclude books from the user they have bookmarked.
HisPuzzlePiece simple mind ⋅ August 11, 2013
Oh ok, yeah im sure that makes sense, thanks for the reply! x

Ada O. ⋅ August 12, 2013
Hi Diarylord. Are there rules here? Do you allow pornographic content? Do you require it to be friends only? Will you intervene in fights between members? If there are rules, are they available somewhere on the site? I haven't been able to find any.
simple mind Ada O. ⋅ August 12, 2013
Greetings! I must admit that I wasn't prepared for the site to grow as quickly as it has. Since it's still so young, there are a lot of things that haven't been addressed properly yet. Rules and Terms of Service are one of those things.
When I do establish that, you can expect similar rules to other social networking sites. I do not want to deal with pornography and other content that most users find offensive, so it will be forbidden. My plan is to make is as easy as possible to report site abuse (like a button on entries/comments). I also expect to recruit some trusted individuals to help with site moderation. Hope that clarifies!
Ada O. simple mind ⋅ August 12, 2013
Ok, but personally, I would like to cast my vote for the option of friends-only erotica. I think erotic writing is a harmless way for people to express themselves as long as they take reasonable precautions to filter out minors and anyone who might be offended.
simple mind Ada O. ⋅ August 12, 2013
Yeah, I don't really see the harm in that. It wouldn't show up on the main page, and anyone who doesn't like it can remove you (or the book, once I add that ability) from their bookmarks.
whybee simple mind ⋅ August 14, 2013
we could also have community-based ratings. such as having buttons to mark things as inappropriate for mass consumption, or spam, or outright bad. of course, this also involves having "people" check the validity of such submissions. but it can help those people with having to comb through million lines of text for obscene content.

EvequeFou ⋅ August 12, 2013
How about TLS support? We're writing personal stuff here, and it's flowing unencrypted over the wild, ugly Internet.
whybee EvequeFou ⋅ August 14, 2013
this is pretty moot. you want people to read what you write? then it doesn't need TLS. you want it to be private? then why not just open up a text editor.
EvequeFou whybee ⋅ August 15, 2013
Yes, if everything is anonymous, one-off, and either wide open or completely closed, you're right. But it's the middle points that most people live in.... Without TLS, anyone on-link or on-path with you: * Can post as you, or edit/delete your existing posts * Can read anything you can read, defeating the Friends Only settings of your friends
TLS lets us have at least some trust in the identity by posts and comments, and in the privacy settings we select.
Lobbastah ⋅ August 13, 2013
Something i noticed that's not really a huge deal, but... when I come to the main page on my phone, and I want to see recent entries, I have to scroll down down down past the new users and new books created. I think I would rather see recent entries first and then new users and books. It's not a deal breaker for me, but when I only have a few minutes to read a new entry or two on my phone, I'd rather not spend all my time scrolling. Just a thought.
Silent Echo/Quiet Storm ⋅ August 14, 2013
maybe a counter so i'll know how much i've written? i'm a bit obsessive like that. so far this is a pretty good site. i'm impressed with the almost daily improvements. take care,
whybee ⋅ August 14, 2013
not sure if it's on the list, but we need a random button. what it needs to do is display a random entry from X number of hours or days. oh, what would be awesome is if one could choose such X number, such as give the users a setting to allow the random button to randomize entries within X number of hours, allowing them to choose between days or hours.
though, i suppose the randomizing factor, and landing on "already visited" entries, would be a little more complicated, but perhaps in time?

Is there a way you could maybe use the same idea for the "Open my prosebox" deal??? Just an idea!

First, awesome job here. This place is more polished than I would ever have imagined after so short a time. Next, a couple of suggestions, and I have no idea if these have been suggested yet so ignore if that is the case.
How about a random button, like OD? I know I used to surf that way all the time and in fact have a couple of real life friends now that I originally stumbled on surfing random.
An additional comment box at the bottom of all the comments. Not at all a deal breaker but it would be nice to not have to scroll all the way to the top after having read all the comments.
Keep up the good work!
Sapphire_Eyes ⋅ August 18, 2013
Is there a way to transfer our entries from OD to here? Many of us have been on OD for YEARS and don't want to lose that history. If there isn't currently a way, can there be lol :-)?
poppyseed ⋅ August 18, 2013
Could we have the actual date (and maybe time) of the entry instead of "one day ago" and so forth? If I'm going back to look at an older entry, I don't want to have to open a calendar and look to see, "Ohhhh, I wrote that on August 16, 2012," trying to figure out what date "written 370 days ago" was. I frequently go back to older entries and having a concrete date in front of me is much more useful than "x days ago" is for piecing together events on days that my old brain has trouble remembering.
Apologies if this has shown up in other suggestions - I got lazy and didn't read all the way to the bottom.
simple mind poppyseed ⋅ August 18, 2013
That won't happen; after 7 days it reverts back to a date. Hopefully the relative time makes better sense to you in the near term, and dates in the far term.
poppyseed simple mind ⋅ August 18, 2013
Wow, you're fast! It's the longer-term that is of greater concern to me, since obvs I can remember what happened two days ago, so having it revert to a date after a week does what I'm wanting. Thanks for the speedy response!

I am new and just getting the feel of this, but it looks promising. It would be great if there were some more organized (even indexed) help system telling how the different features work-- e.g.If I reply to a comment, is the author of the original comment notifed / copied on the reply? -- stuff like that. But I guess I'll eventuallyy pick things like that up. And what's the word limit on comments?
It would be nice to see the number of page hits we get on an entry to see how many silent readers we had.
I do see that this version is still a beta, so maybe it's a little early to expect that much organization, and, I suppose things are still in flux.
Otherwise, looks good!

I think a "Random" button would be nice. I come across a lot of people on OD by using the random button. I'm sitting here bored and would like to just random through some entries. I realize that this site still isn't huge, but I like random!
Deleted user ⋅ August 29, 2013
Right now, it's hard to find users with similar interests. If the user could enter a list of interests describing him/herself (or, better, keywords describing each book) and we could search on those, it would help a lot. Barring that, a longer list of recent entries would help.
Deleted user Deleted user ⋅ August 30, 2013
There was some mention of way to tag entries and books somewhere along the line; a good tag system would give us the functionality of circles and interests, both. I've asked that we can also hide entries and books and users who have a particular tag...
Sapphire ⋅ August 31, 2013
Is there any way to export entries/books? Or is this going to be added at some point? I want to use Prosebox for a writing project (among other things) but if the only way to get at my entries externally is to copy and paste them I probably won't bother.
Deleted user ⋅ September 01, 2013
Here's a suggestion: As an aid to browsing / finding interesting entries, expand the number of "Latest Entry" items to 100 or more. I myself would prefer a smaller font for these to reduce scrolling. Put the latest books/boxes on another page and stretch the "Latest Entries" horizontally for the same reason. The latter stuff is just a matter of formatting taste, but I do think it is important to increase the size of the list, especially since it's sometimes dominated by a few prolific writers. It would not, presumably, be a hard change and would facilitate interaction.
Jewelsi ⋅ September 07, 2013

I'm sure this is already on your list, but I'd love an easy way to back up my prosebox. My other most desired suggestion is the ability to search my own writing and also the ability to search the writing of others.

An auto log off after so many minutes would be fabulous for those of us who like our privacy. And change the log in so that it doesn't default to remember me.

I love reading PB on my Kindle tablet. However I have to log in whenever I want to navigate. For example I log into PB and I see I have comments. I click to read my comments and it takes me to the login where I have to log in, again. Then my comments come up. After I read them I click to go to my bookmarks. It sends me to log on, again. Even when I click on the Remember Me square it still makes me log in repeatedly. Since this is on my tablet I have to use the tablet keyboard to log in. I am usually at work on my break and because of the manor log ins and the slow WiFi here I don't get to do much here before my time is up. Any help on this , would be appreciated.

Weird. I imagine it has something to do with your browser cookies, since PB uses a cookie to track sessions. A couple of things: make sure your browser is set up to allow cookies, and if so try clearing out the cookies. I can't give you more specific instructions since I'm not familiar with the Kindle browser.
