Hired to fired
Found out yesterday they let the person they laid off go. She was a nice person, not a great worker so I’m not surprised. Luckily she got another job as she was laid off, she said doesn’t pay as much but at least she’s not going to be left out in the cold after waiting three months to hear if we’ll bring her back. I guess the good news is we are now looking for her replacement, which means they don’t think we have too many people when, in fact, we don’t have enough. So, as long as I work hard I don’t think they’ll let me go. It’s always a worry on my mind though cause things could change quickly.

I really try not to get upset when people on FB, or other places, talk politics. In fact, I normally keep my nose out of it. I’m a liberal democrat for sure and I want the government to work for me, not big business, cause I believe if they take care of the little people it’ll move up to the big people. I never believed in the trickle down theory, although it has some merits, I’ve just haven’t seen it working on a large scale. Whereas the move up theory seems to have more traction.

This all comes from a post about people on my FB page who oppose a higher minimum wage.
I’m all for a higher minimum wage, but I understand that it has to be in increments, like you can’t expect a business who’s paying someone 7.50 and hour to overnight pay someone 15 dollars and hour. I also understand that it might hurt some small business, but then again a Wal-mart coming into your town will also hurt small businesses and I don’t hear too many of the minimum wage detractors talk about that, but I digress.
To me, it just makes sense that it helps the economy when the people have more money to spend. It makes more sense that someone bringing home more will use that money to buy more stuff, go to more dinners with the family, buy better products, and just be more active in spending if they have it. It would also bring a lot or people out of poverty, maybe get them off food stamps and welfare, something my minimum wage opposing friends also oppose.

I hear things like, ‘only kids make minimum wage.’ And ‘a minimum wage job is only a temp job for some people.’ And that might be true, but I used to work at a fast food place as a teen and most of the people I worked with were adults who were down on their luck, or between jobs, and they would always complain about not making enough money, or they had to run from that job to another, and even then I couldn’t help but wonder why one job wasn’t enough, why they had to struggle. My parents worked very hard and we barely made it by, although they made more than minimum wage (no idea how much more) and they had two children to raise.

There are plenty of studies that show raising the minimum wage in a responsible way doesn’t hurt small business as much as we think and, depending on the business, actually helps them. So, I hope we raise the minimum wage and I hope it helps, and doesn’t hurt, the country.
