Uniquely Positioned in Book Seven: Reconstruction 2020

There are three things that I see from my tower that I feel I am in a unique position to see

(1) Man’s absolute inhumanity and cruelty never ceases to surprise or dismay me. The brutality, the heartlessness, the ability to do the most hideous things to loved ones and children? Even the demons fear man, for man’s imagination for cruelty outstrips theirs by a wide margin.

(2) The justice system serves no one. Despite the best intentions and hopes of decent people; there is no such thing as justice. A 25 year old with an OWI conviction is driving drunk and kills three people. He’s not been charged with anything. The crash happened in August. It may take up to a full year before charges are pressed and the entire time… the family that had to bury their loved ones grieve… and the 25 year old fuck-face experiences not even a traffic ticket. Or… a married man spends every evening yelling insults and threats to his wife (in front of their children). Every night, torturing her psychologically with insults and accusations and bile. And there’s nothing the law can do. Not a damned thing. Because being a toxic, hostile, garbage human… and doing it in front of the children… isn’t illegal.

(3) Intelligence is relative. I grew up honestly thinking that I wasn’t smart. Because I was surrounded by people far smarter. I miss that. A wise person once said, “Never be the smartest person in the room”. Because minds sharpen minds. I know and am in contact with less than 5 people that I can say with certainty are smarter than I am. And that doesn’t just mean “book learning.” Of course, all of this will shift whenever… if ever COVID ends. I’ll have access to places and people again. I’ll be able to spend time with more than just Criminal Defendants and Files. I’ll be able to go to museums again. There is absolutely a much needed trip to Chicago in my future when shit clears.

It's sad to read this - It would be so good if you could have community with like-minded people. I wish so much that you could move to an area where you would be stimulated and encouraged. I know part of it is CoVid, but from what you've written, you live in an area where it's hard to come across intelligent, open-minded people, desirable women, dog walkers, and cleaners. There is not an arts scene nearby. I'm wondering, what is it that keeps you there that you couldn't find elsewhere? Sorry if you've written about that (more than once maybe) and I missed it.
I know it would be very difficult for you to move, for all kinds of reasons. Are you open to it?

Honestly, and I've been considering writing this entry for a while... but it is like professional baseball. Some kids go from College to the Majors but some have to play in the minors for a while before they get a shot at The Big Show. And some never get that shot. That's what Prosecution is around here. I have to play the minor league small county Prosecution jobs before I can get a shot at the Big City "high crime" set ups. Which is actually backwards and ridiculous. The Big City prosecutors specialize in ONE area of Crime. You've got your "Juvenile Law Desk" or the "OWI Department" or the "Sexual Assault Team". In small counties, you've got one other person maybe and you do all the crimes. So mostly, it's just Big City Ego that says "earn your way up here."

That totally makes sense. What about in between? A bigger city but not the Big Leagues?

Park Row Fallout Deleted user ⋅ November 29, 2020

That's actually how I got here. lol. My first job as a prosecutor was TRASH! Truly bloody awful. Entire county was less than 5,000 people! So at least now I work in a county of a little more than 16,000. Get a few years here under my belt; might be able to move up to an area of 50,000 or 60,000 maybe? Just... keep working my way up. I've interviewed with all of the Big League places before and they had a fairly good impression... so... always up to trying them again in a few years time, too.

Oh ok. Well if the Big League places had a fairly good impression, is it worth trying seriously between your county and Big League?

Park Row Fallout Deleted user ⋅ November 29, 2020

Oh definitely. After I get five years under my belt here, I might just interview (if there are interviews to be had) at the Big Leagues... even if only just for the interview experience. NEVER bad to keep that particular skill sharpened.
