Video Interview in These Foolish Things

Hm. Not 100% sure how that went. Many times first interviews are a little iffy, but I still feel confident. Though, I will say I was a bit disappointed with something. I was on video and the interviewer (who’d be my boss) was NOT. She said that there was something wrong with her Teams app or something, and so I had to do the entire interview looking into the camera at a black screen with just her initials “AW” on it. Gotta say, that was unnerving. Why couldn’t she work on that right before we started talking or even during the first five minute of our call? This job is going to be a two-way street, you know? At least, it better be. I am also interviewing the company at this point.
Our conversation leaned a little more towards the fact that there’s probably not a ton of structure to the “new” organization that she’s trying to create. On the one hand, it’s good that there’s going to be a need for a couple of people who can build the structure; on the other hand, sounds somewhat scattered.
But yeah, I still have a good feeling about this company. It is a corporate giant, that’s for sure. There are over 50K employees. But I have worked for another company that had 50K employees as well during its heyday. And yes, I was a cog, but it was not as meh as you might think - because I was in a highly visible position that put me in the limelight sometimes. Sure, there were many days when I felt like an ant, but there was also exotic travel, meetings in glamorous cities (though schlepping is not glamorous), and opportunities abound to sit on committees and do extra things to get to know people from other areas of the company. And the other thing about working for such a giant is that new career opportunities come more often - if you can say, hey, I worked for [giant corporation] for 5 years, it’s much easier to find your next big gig.
Not that I want to continue to job hop for years and years…I just want something fresh and new. I need big changes in my life. I feel it so hard right now.

Right? I mean, I tested mine, but in the end I still had to get on my phone (video, of course), to take this call. Still, they use Teams for all of their meetings and she still couldn't get it to work?

We have moved over to Teams for all our calls and meetings - and after some initial teething difficulties with licences it just works. So I call bullsh*t! xx

We do 99% of our Teams meetings with video off in my company, so maybe she was expecting that for your call and wasn’t camera ready. Still, she should have been clear about that or just had a phone call instead. The only reason I could think of using teams for a one on one instead of calling is if she were recording it.

The only thing worse than staring at a blank screen during an interview would be staring at yourself. She totally should have fixed this little technical glitch (unless it was intentional on her end).
