your tired in poetry

her blazing copper shine oxidized
rusted into a sea-green over time
slowly succumbed to the very air
liberty reacting to the world around it
to the people who will always come along
only seeing in her their chance of profit
all they can see is green
all they can see is seas of green
and enough of their grubby hands upon her
and liberty takes on their ugly money coat
but only for a little while
she is orange as the sun itself
just underneath her surface still
we’ve forgotten to scrub all of
the reactionaries off her face
to see her as she yet really is
and the time is now
the time is now to shed the
moneymen who piggybacked on liberty
the time to once more
watch her shine

I remember learning that she was originally a shiny copper goddess. funnily enough I didn't learn it in history class, but rather science when we did an experiment with a solution of copper that turned out green as anything.
I visited the island a couple of times as a kid and I was always mesmerized by her sandals. plus when the Ghostbusters used the Nintendo arcade controller to move her through New York city.
