Won’t work for Canadians, Kiwis and Aussies, sorry.

But read the notes, that may help.

When and if you come back, please tell me what this last year has done to and for you.

That was so moving last year and still is, but our emotions were so raw then and that performance just tapped right into that. What has the last year done to and for me? I think I'd have to write an essay. It has brought me down to face the reality that we haven't come as far as we thought we had in this country with regard to racism and equal rights for all, including the LGBT community. It has cut me to the core to see the bigotry, hatred, and ignorance that obviously have always been there and we just didn't see it. But I have also been lifted up by the kindness that people are going out of their way to show, by the resistance to hate that we see, by the fight and determination of good, loving people. Am I disillusioned and afraid and weary? Shocked, dismayed, ashamed, embarrassed? Yes. But I can't live that way so I choose to do what I can, to not feed hatred, to vote.

I found watching this now affected me more in a way. I was closer to tears.
A year ago it was so raw, so personal, now it's.... more history and also worse. We did not know what was coming and in ways it's been worse than we could have anticipated. But we are all still here, so far.

I really regret the way Hillary has been treated after she lost the election. I believe she has behaved graciously and yet so many people seem to hate her. I do not understand.

Beret woman in the moon ⋅ November 15, 2017

I also believe she has behaved graciously. However, at this point in time I wish she would just go away. I don't want to hear from her any longer. And maybe my anger towards her is misplaced. Maybe it is the Democrats in general, or the DNC, where I should direct my anger. And I do that too. It makes me angry that the Democrats could not come up with anyone besides Hillary. Her likability was an issue before the election. It was like she was the heir apparent. Perhaps she meant well but in so many ways she just came across as haughty to me.

woman in the moon Beret ⋅ November 15, 2017

I think Hillary had the right, and maybe even an obligation to write a book about the campaign. Other than the book and the selling of the book, I don't see that Hillary has done anything to keep herself in the limelight. It's all been the anti-Hillary forces that keep bringing her up in order to draw attention from Trump.
How do you feel about Bernie Sanders? I suppose you can guess that I didn't like him. I think he should be minding his own business instead of trying to run again. Or whatever he is doing.

I did not, do not, like Bernie. He should have dropped out of the race much sooner but chose to hang on. Why? Not that it would have made any difference probably. He's another one that I wish would go away.

Anaiss Beret ⋅ November 16, 2017

I agree. Bernie's plans sounded great but weren't viable. I think he should have dropped out sooner and I am afraid of what effect he could possibly have on the next election. He can't win, and I know there are a lot of people who feel that it's still important to support him and what he stands for but in my opinion all it's doing is splitting the vote and helping the Republican to win. He rode a wave of intoxicating enthusiasm of young people, and it's wonderful to see them getting involved. I have a beloved niece and also a favorite cousin and his lovely wife who are each fervent Bernie supporters and I understand how they feel, but, I, too, wish he would go away.

NorthernSeeker November 15, 2017

The last year has shown me how many checks and balances there are in the US political system. Trump has been greatly thwarted in delivering his nasty agenda. If he's proving anything it's that the President alone doesn't have much power. The same is true in Canada of the Prime Minister. Lucky for Trudeau many Liberals are happy to be connected with him and he doesn't have the same number of really vicious and committed adversaries that Trump has inspired, especially within Trump's own party.

Beret NorthernSeeker ⋅ November 15, 2017

I was a believer in checks and balances too. Not so sure any more. Especially when you look at who he is appointing in key positions. Such as the EPA. Or what if he is successful in getting rid of federal lands? His undoing of trade agreements or not pursuing trade agreements and so on and so on. How can those things be recovered?

NorthernSeeker Beret ⋅ November 15, 2017

Certainly you are better informed and have more knowledge of the scope of the damage Trump could do. Take my opinion lightly...I don't live there.

Beret NorthernSeeker ⋅ November 15, 2017

I find your opinion interesting and valid. I guess I am shocked at how much I thought there was a system of checks and balances that would thwart him yet in many cases that is not what is happening. In some cases it is however. Such as the immigration battle and banning of certain peoples. That keeps getting shot down by the courts. There is just so much wrong with this administration.

woman in the moon Beret ⋅ November 15, 2017

Also keep in mind Trump is packing the courts, all of them, with the negative kinds of conservatives. Their rulings will last for decades. He is leaving a lot of the executive appointments empty so in effect he is decreasing the working/regulatory part of government down to Grover Norquist's idea of a government small enough to drown in the bathtub .
Trump was a bad idea.

woman in the moon NorthernSeeker ⋅ November 15, 2017

The cabinet is of course part of the executive department. I worry about judges. This most recent on who is a blogger and has never tried a case and is the husband of the the woman who works in the White House to determine who gets on the list to be a judge.

Beret woman in the moon ⋅ November 16, 2017

I hear you. From what I understand it is not a requirement to list your spouse's job. However, in this case, you would think someone with integrity would have disclosed this.
He chose not to. Grassley is defending him.

woman in the moon NorthernSeeker ⋅ November 15, 2017

You're right. The courts have knocked down some of Trump's ideas = mainly the immigration stuff. And Congress hasn't exactly given him a rubber stamp - though that's more because of divisions in the Republicans who are different levels of crazy and can't come to their own agreements.
I hate hate hate the apparent racism that is pouring over the country. I got that from country radio - the idea that we here in Iowa are the same as those in the South. We aren't. But those who think we are are the ones who voted for Trump. And the rest of the Republicans who fill our state and local governments.
Sorry for the rant. It's been a rough year, in a lot of ways.
If Moore gets the Alabama Senate seat, I don't know what I'll do or say.
btw son John read the Franken book all last evening and took it to bed with him. Of course there isn't much entertainment around our house, except for Authors.

Katren...In Conclusion November 15, 2017

I loathe hate and fear --- especially in myself. Harm none, harm none,...harm none

woman in the moon Katren...In Conclusion ⋅ November 15, 2017

I wish we could be a better country. Maybe my life is too sheltered. But I wonder if we couldn't just be nicer, be more Golden Rule-ish, more kind to ourselves and others. I regret that my lift is ........ wow I have no end for that sentence. I'm getting old and I'm staying home. Period.

Just Annie November 15, 2017

I think that Trump and his ilk have motivated a lot of people to find their voices - including me - and I think that's a positive thing.

Personally, I like myself more than I ever have before. And I'm much better at sticking up for myself and setting boundaries. Oh, and I learned that I like whisky. Expensive whisky, single malt, finished in a sherry barrel. :)

I may be too stupid or oblivious to say I scare easy, but there are signs around us that give me a sense that things could go from bad to worse in a news cycle or two.
That song helps in some way though.

Very touching, the combination of Cohen and Clinton.
And now I have Franken to deal with. I intend to write something. It was odd that son John was home and read Franken's book just the night before Franken got in trouble. He told me and I asked what happened and John said he had been mean to a woman. John explaining to his kids, to me.
