‘“Like Paris,” he writes, “Aspen is a city of light, gaiety, generally civilized behavior, and agreeable streets. It is thought of as a sexual paradise, and in fact there is a vast array of available partners of both sexes, for the most part with enviable tans.”

**James Salter’s essays - Don’t Save Anything**

Aspen is not on the list of places that come to my mind when the words "sexual paradise" are said. Maybe Rio de Janeiro or New Orleans...certainly not a place with agreeable streets.

He wrote it a while ago. Maybe it was at the time.

You've been to Aspen? I love the way Canadians 'own' western US. It's very sweet.

NorthernSeeker woman in the moon ⋅ November 15, 2017

I've never been to Aspen, Rio, or New Orleans yet I have opinions about them formed from years of reading. I've been to Whistler and other ski resorts and didn't find them particularly licentious.

I have this terrible way of falling in love with writers. And Salter is one of mine. He was talking about early Aspen, he is a man, he was trying to sell the place.... what do you expect?

NorthernSeeker woman in the moon ⋅ November 15, 2017

Just so you know, I'm smiling while I write this. The world is a big place. I do not need to have opinions on Salter or Aspen or feel any sense of ownership of the western US. I relinquish all such claims and opinions. I must continue to maintain my sense of humour even if it slightly infringes on the former pledge.

You're forgiven. I like to claim little bits of Canada too. We are friends as countries and individuals. I like the idea of Canadians 'owning' the part of the US that's south of them. We are both big countries, we can share.
You'd be surprised at the people who go straight north to fish in Manitoba.

Plus you can have some Iowa. Or Minnesota or Wisconsin. Some of the time you didn't know where you were, and that was sweet also. And I'm smiling too.

We need to write about our favorite parts of each other's places sometime.

You can have ALL of Illinois !

These days a “ sexual paradise” would not interest me an iota :-) but pass me the gaiety, light, history, civilized behavior , great food and good wine . Flowers would be icing on the cake !

I hate to give up totally on the 'idea' of sex. I love the idea of Salter. He died several years ago at age 90, so I think he's probably way past sex too.
I agree with you here though - flowers and books.

Deleted user woman in the moon ⋅ November 15, 2017

Books too !

Yes!

I don't think I'll make it to Aspen in spite of it's lovely description. There's too much winter here to make it a bucket list place for me :)

John Denver wrote a Christmas song I love called” Aspen Glow”.

And he named himself after Denver. I miss him. Too bad he didn't get to live to be an old man.
