I did 5 programs in 4 days and a couple thousand miles of road time..
The crew stopped for lunch at this fried catfish and seafood place. There was a bit of a wait and I was entertaining everyone apparently with some waiting line humor. There was a girl waiting behind us. I told the crew - now would be a good time to make a new friend at one of these tables and sit down and eat with them… Everyone laughed - including the girl behind us. She asked if we’d ever eaten there and we had coming home from another show a few years ago - she was a local. They called our party and I half jokingly said - are you here alone or with another party? Every table in this place sat 5 or more. She said she was eating alone. Another person in our crew was like - you wanna make some new friends? I said - if you don’t mind sitting with a bunch of silly white folks!!! She laughed and actually joined us.
As we got to know her she opened up how she has to force herself to leave home alone. She doesn’t want to be around crowds and eating alone today was a way of living life differently. She began to ask about our music and what part I played. I said we mostly sing and play to tracks since all the white people we sing to don’t expect much - that got another laugh out of her and she was like - “you play too much!!”
We all had the best time!!
I’m not sure we’re doing the restaurant thing too well. We should do it this way - sit with strangers and make a new friend!
I insisted that we cover her meal since we asked her to sit with us.
She may have been searching for something and found something else in a group of people not even in her ethnicity. Beauty can be found anywhere you look! Friendships can be made in an instant!
Encounters are always a possibility when we do the right thing!
