Fairness and lack thereof in The Devil Beneath My Feet

A woman I work with is seemingly CONSTANTLY complaining about fairness, and the lack of fair play happening at my job.

The story is thus. She is hired for a 4pm-12am shift and at the last minute told it's been switched to 8am-4pm. She complains that this is not fair, and to a degree I agree with her. That's deception and false advertisement. So she brought that up, per my recommendation, and it was rectified immediately(once I said 'if she sued us she would win.')

Now she's decided that she wants back on that shift. The answer is no, other accommodations were made and someone from the 4pm-12am shift moved so that you could have their spot. There are now no available spots on the day shift. Tough cookies.

Now she complains this isn't fair. I mean...she's wrong. The end. That's all there is to it.

What baffles me though, is...I just don't understand, how and when did she get this fallacy of an idea that the universe deals in fairness? Who told her this? They've done her a disservice. How can she possibly hold on to this grossly incorrect notion that life is fair after watching her eldest daughter die from cancer? She was a child and was killed by her own god, where do you find the fairness in this? You don't, for many reasons, the first of which being that the infantile notion of a magic man in the sky controlling every fascet of your life is nonsense but most importantly, the underlying message, life is not fair.

Not to mention, if we're going to talk about FAIR, here, besides the fact that her child died of cancer and yet this woman still somehow finds enough fairness in that to continue to pray to one of a thousand false gods, how about all the shifts she's offered to cover, only to back out at the last second, ensuring that someone has to stay an extra four hours, put off their life for four more hours? How about all the times she's called out or left early because YET ANOTHER emergency situation has arisen with one of her two children, causing someone to stay and postpone their own life again, or come in on their day off? I understand being a single mother is difficult, but in order to feed these children you have to work. In order to work you need to figure out accommodations for these children. If you can't find someone dependable to watch your children for you then you need to contact your local Agency for daycare assistance.

I am not, nor have I ever claimed to have been, the one to go to for sympathy. I have none to give you. If you cannot afford to take care of these children then you 1.) shouldn't be having them and 2.) shouldn't be keeping them.

Fairness is a fallacy, especially in the workplace, and if you're going to complain that you don't think something fair then you're a fool, I don't know what else to tell you.

Hilariously enough, tonight, I was called in to finish off the last 3 hours of her shift, due to YET ANOTHER "emergency" situation for a child. Trouble breathing, or something. Chalk another one up to God, maybe this one dies next.
