Jesus. Fucking. Christ, Humanity. I have never be so goddamn disappointed in all my life. Every subsequent day, from a day so far back I can’t even remember, has been a worse and bigger disappointment than the day before it. I used to see potential in people- beauty even. Yet now I see why people rebirth themselves in the wilderness and live far apart from society, close to the earth.

Human beings (and boy do I include myself in this indictment) are fucking pathetic- except we have no idea. To us, we’re the most brilliant and capable creatures to ever self assemble from Life, but to any other superior entity- super or natural- we have to present ourselves as absolute buffoons, objectively speaking.

I cannot stand the infighting. The constant begging for authoritarianism, purpose, attention, NAME it. The animosity. The vindictiveness. The self interest. The self interest in a lack of self interest. The lying. The manipulating. The unabashed predation. The bleating fear behind the eyes. Fear of being noticed. Fear of not being noticed.

I remember when nerds assured me that the internet was going to save the world. That this magical connectivity would surely be the last step on our way to discovering the Star Trek Replicator and solving all of the world’s (then galaxy’s) problems by uniting under The Way, The Logical Order, The Path Of Scientific Certainty, Of Self Actualized Humanism And Harmonic Empathy With Humans Nature And The Universe Entire…

–(Insert airplane crash sound effect here)–

It’s too much for our tiny organic brains that we have such high opinions of. Now, I’m not a genius, but I am at least competent to know that the human mind is not half as capable as we like to think it is. We like to think that there’s really smart people out there- way smarter than us- that can solve problems, or inform the rest of us on how best to traverse the universe- but alas, it’s dumb-dumbs, through and through. The smartest human being would seem no greater an intellect to a superior creature as the smartest cockroach would seem to us.

Computers, AI in particular, might not have the full scope of the organic brain- but it can do very specific things very quickly in comparison, and it can do specific other things- particularly the storage of data, information, memory, etc.- infinitely better. Where these things overlap melts our brains, I think.

Where the actual physical organic memory pairs up with a piece of inorganic networked computerized memory like a piece of film media, and the memory of watching said piece of film media- I think our brains begin confusing the two in subliminal ways, so that other pieces of inorganic networked computerized memory we take in is often confused with our own thoughts and memories.

I think it affects the shape of our values. The internet has now made politics a game of choosing which facts to care about, and which facts to not care about. It’s no longer (if it ever was) about disputing objective things to come to a single decided fact. Now, there are so many facts available at ones fingertips- a study or statistic pointing to any desired outcome- people just choose, or let someone choose for them, or both- without knowing it?- which facts matter, and which do not. Do we care about Hunter Biden’s corrupt laptop? Or do we care about watching invalids tear through the national capital? I don’t think the internet gets enough blame for the fracturing of society for this reason. Everyone thinks they’re the good guy. Everyone is a fucking moron.

–but, of course, it’s not our fault for being barbaric numbskulls. Maybe we can do better.
