Goal Setting in Weight Loss Surgery

Do you guys set goals?

I don’t - because I’ve failed a lot of them.

Grades in school, New Years resolutions - usually weight loss/exercise schedule, financial/savings, etc.

I’m a mix of being super hard on myself and being way too soft.
Believing I can do it and then thinking if it didn’t happen, then it wasn’t meant to be.

I can’t remember the last goal I set for myself. I don’t cause I don’t believe in myself. It doesn’t mean I haven’t accomplished things - it just means I don’t usually pressure myself with a date and time to complete things. I tend to just be happy (or unhappy) with where I’m at but not push myself.

It’s weird because while I do feel like I work better under pressure, but when the pressure is only from and to myself I don’t take it seriously.

I train with my trainer only because it’s another person pushing me.

I’m saving for a house (again) mainly because Will suggested a plan that I’m trying to follow for him. I’m doing it for me too, I want a house. But if I imposed on myself to set a certain amount of money aside for a house - I wouldn’t do it 100%. Because I don’t take myself seriously. I don’t complete goals for me. Always for someone else. That’s an issue within itself.

Well so I was listening to a youtuber who basically said setting goals is the key to success.
Working towards something and proving it to yourself you can builds confidence.
Ticking off the boxes towards your goal is a big part of the reason why you reach it at all.
And once completing goals you’ve set for yourself becomes a habit, the goals just get bigger and bigger, compounding on top of what you’ve already done because you believe in yourself.

I’m afraid to set goals and fail and bash myself. But I do have goals. Mainly weight loss. But also financial things, like saving for a house.

I don’t know exactly how to get started cause… I don’t really use a paper calculator.

I might have to create and print out some sort of checklist for weight loss and for house savings.

And then I’d hang them somewhere. Maybe in my bedroom, where it’s visible to me and my husband but not to any visitors that might come over. I have wall space enough for that.

So I think I’m going to do that. And see if I can complete my own goals for once…

So I made two charts - I wish you guys could see them. They’re just cheesy with clip art but they’re so cute.

So my first goal is to get to 175lbs by Thanksgiving day - pre dinner LOL.

Along with that goal is to work our 16x a month. Just do something, walk, gym or trainer. I’m behind on that goal but not by much.

I know 175 is still overweight for my height (5‘4”), but I just can’t picture myself any smaller than that. When I was that weight… many many year ago… I felt good. The right kind of curvy yet not obese.

Of course, many many years ago my body was much tighter. I’m going to be a body sack of pudding by thanksgiving cause I’m just deflating but still - right now, from 296 to 175 is my goal. And only cause of this surgery do I believe I can get there.

My next goal is have enough money to talk to a realtor by the end of next summer. I’m thinking August, not Sept.

I don’t want to talk actual numbers here because I live in NJ where everything is EXTREMELY expensive. So if I told you what I needed to save - you could prob buy two houses with that. But it is what it is.

SO my next goal is to have enough money to talk to a realtor by the end of summer 2022. At that point we can evaluate if the market is favorable. Cause right now the market is not good for buying. Maybe next year it will be. IF NOT then by HALLOWEEN of 2023 we throw ourselves in the ring no matter what.

By fall of 2023 we are putting offers on houses no matter fucking what and just seeing what it gets us!

Those are my goals.

I set goals, but I also relate to this. There’s not much sense of urgency when there aren’t any real consequences for failing to meet a goal. If being accountable to someone else is what keeps you on track, there’s certainly nothing wrong with that!

exactly, I feel worse failing someone else than failing myself so it's more of a sense of urgency to me when a goal is connected to another person...
