cauterize in poetry

there’s a fever now
inside our heads
and a fever
burns things away

we get a choice
if we can burn up
unrealistic expectations
dreams no longer working
attachments helping no one
we may have a chance yet

or we can set ourselves ablaze
char away to nothing
it really is our choice
