Have you ever wondered why you sleep peacefully when you’ve got things well-organized and settled? Or why you have erratic sleep patterns when you have unfinished, pending tasks? Consider your room, for instance. When you have a huge pile of clothes lying carelessly across the bed, shoes sprawled across the floor, and empty pizza boxes occupying your tables, it paints a sorry picture of your room. A cluttered space leaves you feeling ill at ease even when you are attempting to relax. Well, the simple solution is to devote time to clear the mess up. You wouldn’t want to start your day by waking up to a disorganized place.
However, a challenge that many of us face is deciding where to start. Trust me, you are not the only one facing this quandary. Even for the most organized people, a room can quickly become a dumping ground of miscellaneous items if it is neglected even for a day. However, the more effort we put in cleaning up the room, the less time it will subsequently take for keeping it neat and tidy.

Here we present some simple and practical solutions to declutter your room. Follow them religiously to give it the necessary makeover.

  1. Start With Clothes: Clothes are, without a doubt, one of the major reasons for clutter in your room. Be it the closet, the chairs in the room or a tabletop, unused clothing items can quickly occupy spaces in which they have no business of being. Here are a few things you can do to sort them out.

a) Pack Them Up During Off-Seasons: Ask yourself if you need jackets during summers or gunjee tops during winters? Put them in backpacks and suitcases and stack them away if the season is not right for them. This leaves extra space in the closet which you can use to store other items occupying unnecessary space on the chair or the dressing table.

b) Donate Them: No, your clothing will not be in use at a random future date if they are not being used now. Why unnecessary stuff your closet with them then? Instead, give them to a friend or donate them to a charity.

c) Have a Laundry Basket: It is common for the room to have piles of dirty clothes that are not attended to in many days. It’s better to keep a laundry basket as a hamper to stuff your worn clothes in, which you can later put in the washing machine every two or three days.

  1. Avoid Having Too Many Items: A minimal room is the best room. Agreed, some of your old items may have a sentimental value attached, but a lot of them will make taking care of the room an arduous and unending task. Besides, just having a couple of statement decorative pieces will attract attention and make the room come alive. As an experiment, try hanging a couple of mirrors and get rid of the old stuff. Fewer items also make the room appear bigger and more spacious than what it already is.

  2. Make Space for Footwear in the Closet: If there’s no space to stack your loafers or heels in the closet, have another cabinet made either inside or outside the room. Keeping your shoes aside in a corner of the room instead is never a good idea. Besides the obvious clutter, they create dust and germs which will be detrimental to your well-being.

  3. Give Your Closet a Makeover: Make some extra time to clean your closet thoroughly. Empty it and give every item a thorough check. You will be surprised at discovering some pretty old things that deserve to be recycled at once. You may also find an invaluable item that you had misplaced long ago. Grouping similar things together inside the closet also makes additional space to house things that take up space on the dressing table.

  4. Remove any Extra Furniture: Be truthful and ask yourself when was the last time the chair beside your bed was of any use. Instead, it might have been just another place to dump towels and clothes. An extra piece of furniture never resolves things for you; it is just another burden that requires taking care of.

  5. Install Coat Racks: It’s good to have an arrangement where you can hang your coats and jackets instead of opening the closet door to find a hanger every time you enter home. In the absence of coat racks, we generally tend to toss our clothes on the bed. These things keep us better organized without having to try too hard. They can also be used to hang our trousers and belts.

  6. Add Shelves: A shelf constructed on top of the bed or beside the wall clock can always be used to accommodate books, decorative items, cosmetics, etc.

  7. Start Cleaning: Once you’ve got everything in place and stacked in order, the final step involves making your room squeaky clean. Do not shirk this responsibility, because the cleaner you make your room, the less distracted and troubled you will be. A cleanroom has a direct impact on our mood. Here are a few steps you can follow.

a) Use a clean, dry cloth or sponge to wipe the dust and grime on all surfaces (the bedpost, windows, ledges, shelves, dressing tables and doors)
b) Use a vacuum cleaner for all areas exposed to dust, such as the carpet, floor, rugs and window coverings.
c) Wash your bedsheets, bedcovers, pillow covers, and cushion covers thoroughly.
d) Check the condition of your mattress. If it is old and tattered, get it replaced with a new one. A rough and coarse mattress makes sleeping a task.
e) Get your curtains dry-cleaned.

They say you cannot buy a good lifestyle if you are not willing to. The first step towards maintaining a high standard of living is to have the willingness to work towards it. It is not expensive clothes, perfumes and lavish home decor that define your happiness. If you work hard to keep your surroundings neat, simple and organized, you will capture the essence of a vital and satisfying life.
