NJM14: #datingmyself in These Foolish Things

Date with myself was lovely if not uneventful. I took myself to this hip Japanese restaurant and sat at the bar for some dinner and wine. The bar was FULL when I arrived but there was one spot open on the corner and it was next to a woman sitting by herself. She didn’t seem friendly and kind of sat with her back angled away from me, so I could tell she wasn’t interested in conversation. That’s fine - I wasn’t necessarily interested in talking with her either.

I sat and soaked in the atmosphere. I could hear tiny tidbits of conversations. I could hear two doctors talking about their patients at a table nearby. I could hear parts of the conversation of the three Asian guys playing some kind of video games on their phones (?) and showing each other next to me at the bar…didn’t really understand that at all. And I could hear bits and pieces of conversation from the SUPER cocky and loud young businessmen sitting at the community table behind me.

I watched a date taking place between a very old man and a very young woman. They looked so happy and animated. I saw two men on what looked like a very romantic date in a far corner of the dining room. I watched two hijab-clad women having deep conversations. I watched a very colorful couple - a rubenesque woman in heavy, heavy makeup and her…boyfriend (?) who had the longest, shiniest hair I’ve ever seen on a man. He was huge and he was wearing a fancy suit and they looked like they were very familiar with each other. I listened to the crackle and pop and smelled the smoky scent of a table closeby cooking thin slices of wagyu beef on a hot rock.

I decided that since I have been diagnosed as being anemic recently (from the antiplatelet meds, I’m assuming) I’d get myself a hot rock to cook some lovely red meat. I can’t remember the last time I ate red meat, but it’s supposed to help with iron levels so I can build up my red blood cells again. And I ordered some brussels sprouts to complement the hot rock and my pinot noir.

It was all delicious and the atmosphere was warm but not cozy and I talked to no one. Honestly, it’s rare that I sit at a bar and don’t talk to a single soul. But this place leans younger - it’s mostly a millennial crowd. I don’t know that being millennial necessarily equals unfriendly by any means, but maybe being a millennial on a Wednesday night at THIS particular place means you don’t talk to any GenXers. Ha!

Regardless, it was a really nice evening/dinner/date. I enjoy doing that so I should do it again soon. People watching is such a spectator sport!

Fascinated,
GS

Emma Watson would call it 'self-partnering'

Ginger Snap blackpropaganda ⋅ November 14, 2019

Yes!!! See my previous entry!

blackpropaganda Ginger Snap ⋅ November 14, 2019

Missed the last part!
After a time I guess you might find you are talking to yourself quite a lot

Ginger Snap blackpropaganda ⋅ November 14, 2019

Yeah, I do a lot of that. Also, I talk to the dog a lot! Ha!

blackpropaganda Ginger Snap ⋅ November 14, 2019

And I guess the final aspect is 'self-pleasuring'

Ginger Snap blackpropaganda ⋅ November 14, 2019

Haha! Yeah! I told someone I was taking myself on a date and this morning he asked if I got into my own pants last night! 🤣🤣🤣

My life exactly.

Complicated Disaster November 14, 2019

I often eat out alone especially when travelling with work. I love the people watching aspect! xx

Ginger Snap Complicated Disaster ⋅ November 14, 2019

Love to do that while traveling as well. Seems to be more an effort when you’re home, you know?

Complicated Disaster Ginger Snap ⋅ November 14, 2019

Good point! Although there's not really anywhere to go round here! xx

Florentine November 14, 2019

If I had been there, I would have 100 percent wanted conversation with you! But I am an early/cusp millennial!

Ginger Snap Florentine ⋅ November 14, 2019

Oh my gosh, we would have had the BEST time!

Florentine November 14, 2019

As it is, it’s a Thurs morning and I had brunch club with friends 2 mimosas while my 4 year old was at PreK. 😂 I love talking to new people at restaurants!

Ginger Snap Florentine ⋅ November 14, 2019

I do too!! And mimosas! 😊

As someone who goes out to eat regularly by myself (and a millennial on the older side, 36), sometimes I don't mind talking to people, and sometimes, I just want to be left alone, enjoy the book or show I may be watching on my phone. That's more of the introvert in me though.

Parliament kansasgirl ⋅ November 14, 2019

Agreed. This is less generational and more your personality type. I'm always amazed at how Ginger strikes up convo with EVERYONE. She's good. I'd rather be left to my own devices.

Athena Parliament ⋅ November 14, 2019

Much more personality type. It is super rare for me to talk to someone when I am out, and if someone talks to me, 90% of the time I shut that shit down FAST. As they say on reality TV, "I'm not here to make friends."

I love people watching! So so fascinating.

Ginger Snap Amelie's Twin ⋅ November 14, 2019

Me too!

Jinn November 15, 2019

People watching is fascinating. I usually take a book if I am out alone or bury myself in my phone. I will say that 95 percent of the time though someone will try to engage me. My husband says it’s something about my face . When we are in stores even babies will make eye contact and wave at me . :-)

Marg November 15, 2019

I do love people watching - it’s so fascinating!

Some of my best dates have been ones I've taken myself on. Glad you had a good time!
