The Very Short Birth Survey in Scottish Meanderings

I’m trying to stick to my goal of writing one entry a month but it’s been a very rough month so I’m struggling a bit to get April’s in. Hence this short survey in lieu of a proper entry then I’ll try harder in May!

Only Child

Father in Room
Yes. Not so sure how keen he was - he was working that day so arrived at around lunchtime then apparently it got very boring after I got diamorphine and I wasn’t making much sense so he went off to the Chinese across the road and got himself a carry out! He did stay till the bitter end (of the labour) though and I saw him wiping his eyes at one point when I was in quite a bit of distress and things had been going on for far too long. It was only when I was a ‘birthing partner’ myself to Nikki that I very much appreciated how tedious it all is and how much in the way you feel most of the time.

Induced?
Yes - I went 10 days over time so was induced on the 7th March - spent a very boring day and sleepless night in hospital then my waters were broken at 9.30 the next morning. I walked about dripping everywhere for a while (much to the consternation of the domestic staff who were taking the chance of a relatively quiet spell to try and clean each labour room) then when the contractions started in earnest, spent a lot of time on a beanbag which was great for moulding yourself into different positions although not so great for getting out of! When Boyd went off for his Chinese around 2 p.m. this lovely calm midwife came on duty with a trainee and gave me that wonderful shot of diamorphine and all I remember for a few hours after that (before hell descended) is bright sunny curtains blowing in the breezy March sunshine and the three of us all being together in this endeavour to get me through the pain. It was very Earth Motherish in there for a while.

Hours in labour?
15 I think - I’m never very sure when they count it from? I took it from the time my waters were broken and contractions started to the time she was born - 19 minutes past midnight.

Forceps needed?
Yes. I was getting nowhere for a long time despite being put on the Oxytocin drip and then I think Nikki passed muconium eventually so suddenly I was jacked up to these awful stirrups and a giant pair of forceps produced which almost made me faint at the sight of them and knowing where they were very obviously going. There then - unbelievably - ensued an argument between 2 obstetricians - in between my legs - as to how to use them!!

Knew gender?
No it was 1988. I didn’t even have a routine scan. I envy all the scans mums get nowadays.

Due date?
February 27th.

Birth Date?
March 9th.

Morning sickness?
No but a horrible severe nausea throughout the whole damn pregnancy - I had 2 days of feeling okay in the whole 9 months although one was a Bank Holiday so ..... small mercies an’ all that.

Cravings?
None that I can remember - I seem to recall cottage cheese and jam sandwiches in white starchy bread worked with the nausea to a degree but I don’t think I was eating anything weird (well some might disagree in light of that previous statement).

Gender?
Girl. (I still remember the joy at hearing the words "Congratulations! You have a gorgeous little girl!" and looking up to see this beautiful, long baby. The relief was palpable - Boyd had not wanted kids so I knew I was only getting one 'shot' at this and was desperately hoping I would get a daughter :)

Place of birth?
Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.

Weight?
8lbs 14.5 ozs.

Name?
Nikki.

Age now?
31.

Just thought - maybe I should do this for all the grandchildren from the birthing partner's point of view!!

The Clark family with fairly new addition. My face isn't dirty - there's a mark on the ancient photo which I don't have the skills to get rid of!

All grown up with the newest member of the next generation - excuse the blurriness - Lily took it and hasn't quite mastered the art of keeping the phone still when taking a photo :)

Wow, it was nice they gave pain meds . With both of mine , my blood pressure was low ( I normally have very low blood pressure ) and so they would not give me anything. Both times were awful . The first was the worst ; I had a “hung over” physician who screamed at me and said insulting things to me because I was only 18 . I waited eleven years to have another child .

Wow no wonder after that experience!!

:-)

Nice pictures!

Marg Deleted user ⋅ April 30, 2019

Thank you!

mcbee April 30, 2019

That was my son's due date, but he didn't arrive until 3/17/84! About the same weight, ended up being an emergency c-section. Love the pictures!

Marg mcbee ⋅ April 30, 2019

Oh I'm sorry you ended up with a C section - that sounded stressful!

woman in the moon April 30, 2019

you are a very pretty woman - I liked both the family pictures.
I also liked what you said = never saw it anywhere else - about the disadvantages of witnessing someone else's birth.

Marg woman in the moon ⋅ April 30, 2019

Aw thank you! And yes I realised after being one that birthing partners get a pretty bad press in general but it's no picnic for them either!

ConnieK April 30, 2019

Hey, I have trouble keeping a camera steady! LOL! You have such a pretty smile. :)

Marg ConnieK ⋅ April 30, 2019

Aw thank you Connie!

Justlovely April 30, 2019

I love the then and now pictures!

Marg Justlovely ⋅ April 30, 2019

Thank you!

^..^Kat April 30, 2019

I love the pictures. I'm kind of laughing at him going to get Chinese take out. :)

Marg ^..^Kat ⋅ April 30, 2019

Apparently I was 'taking forever' to reply to him presumably because I was drugged to the eyeballs on the good stuff :)

thesunnyabyss April 30, 2019

great survey!!!

beautiful family!!!!

Marg thesunnyabyss ⋅ May 01, 2019

Thank you!

MageB April 30, 2019

Now this is a really nice entry. Beautiful people, and good stories too.
Cravings? Cream puffs. LOL

Marg MageB ⋅ May 01, 2019

Oh my! Now I want one :)

JustSurviveSomehow April 30, 2019

Love this idea for an entry! It does kind of terrify me, not gunna lie ;). Arguing about forceps?! I love the pictures!

Marg JustSurviveSomehow ⋅ May 01, 2019

Thank you and I really hope you get a chance to write your own sometime in the future - going by your reading it looks like that's a distinct possibility! :)

Beret May 01, 2019

Lovely! My son was born in 88 also. I can't believe he is 31!

kmh. May 03, 2019

I enjoyed this!
OMG at them arguing about how to use the forceps while you're just there like "Hellooooo?" LOL
My Dad went and got fish & chips while Mum was in labour with me haha.. and brought them back to the room and ate in front of Mum who couldn't eat! She is still angry about it to this day haha, he just wasn't thinking.
Nikki looks so much like you :)

Marg kmh. ⋅ May 03, 2019

Lol yes he came back and had the Chinese in front of me but at that point I didn't care haha! And Four said her hubby actually ate the lunch she'd made for herself - men - same the world over :)
And you're right re the argument - I was literally lying there in agony thinking are they seriously having an argument about what to do with that giant torture instrument down there??!

noko May 04, 2019

Well done! On the post and the birth. :)

Sabrina-Belle May 05, 2019

Interesting post. 15 hours in labour sounds a long time, I was lucky all 3 labours were 5 hours. Lovely photos.

Marg Sabrina-Belle ⋅ May 06, 2019

Felt like a long time an' all! :)

NorthernSeeker May 05, 2019

That's a lovely photo of you and Nikki with your grandson. I hope May is a better month for you. I guess you've been spending a lot of time helping Nikki.

Marg NorthernSeeker ⋅ May 06, 2019

Some but not as much as I was expecting - she seems to be coping a lot better than I thought which is good.

Serin May 07, 2019

Yeah, don't worry about the blurriness. Seeing the progression to the next generation is worth a little camera shake. :)

The argument about how to use the forceps in front of you. Well in front of some of you, I guess. That does not sound at all a good time.

Marg Serin ⋅ May 07, 2019

It is indeed and at least we now have just one photo instead of several hundred of someone's chin :)
I have to admit it wasn't one of those moments where I thought I'll laugh about this in years to come. I found out later the guy doing the most arguing was about to be struck off because he was so incompetent - I'm soooooo glad he got to experiment on my bits in the process!

edna million May 23, 2019

Yikes - that does not sound fun at ALL! Hooray for the drugs, though! I always said that if I DID have a baby, I'd take all the drugs they would give me. Those are great photos, both the before and after. Is Boyd quite a bit older than you? I am not a good judge of ages so no insult to him if he's not!

Marg edna million ⋅ May 24, 2019

No you’re spot on - he was 9 years older than me. Well I suppose he still is actually :)
