Odd Jobs in These Foolish Things

Oh, here’s more stuff I’ve forgotten to write down in the last week or so.

My dream job was posted at my former company a couple of weeks ago - did I tell you this? THIS is the job I have been waiting for - for YEARS! I am perfect for this job and if you lined my resume/CV up with the qualifications and duties of this job it would line up exactly! I couldn’t believe that they didn’t call to talk with me like the same day they posted.

Guess what they did instead? They sent me back a form rejection email. As in, a fucking slap in the face!

I almost cried when I saw it in my inbox, but then I sent a text to a former co-worker, asking if I’d somehow been blackballed and telling her about the form letter. She must have been at lunch with her boss (my former boss) and they both said that they were shocked by this and that it was a really rude response from the company.

So you know what I have done? And maybe this is the wrong thing to do, but I touched base with an exec that I used to work with who told me to send her my resume so she could forward it to the VP in charge of the area. And THEN I emailed the HR manager who’s responsible for the area (today, over a week later).

I’ll understand if a human either writes or calls and gives a legit reason that they don’t think I’d be a good fit, but my guess is that they’ll either reach out if they really want to talk or I’ll hear nothing further.

I truly have zero idea what could have triggered that canned response, though. I’m a former employee in very good standing and had a fantastic track record. As I was leaving I was told to reach out if I ever wanted to come back. But many of my former colleagues have moved on, so…only a few folks left who were there during my time.

So. The story on my colleague, let’s call him JR, is that he’s an older kinda geeky engineer guy who is very valuable to the company because he keeps all of his records in his head and in these little notepads that he carries around. He has years and years of industry experience and holds dozens and dozens of patents.

And all of our overseas vendors absolutely looooove him. He’s a really nice guy, but I have trouble with him because he’s a HUGE gossip and I just don’t like to hear that stuff. He used to come over to gab with me about everyone and I’d always have to find a way to nip his chitter chatter in the bud. Like, I’d always have to find an excuse to get up and leave for a meeting or something when he’d start in on the smack.

I also have trouble workwise because he talks in such a roundabout way that he ends up saying nothing and I truly don’t understand what he’s talking about 90% of the time. But again, he’s very well liked in all foreign locations, holds tons of company information in his head and in the end, is a smart dude who I have to work with on occasion.

I’ve never traveled with him per se, but I’ve always ended up meeting him in some of the locations where I need to go - for example, my company has an office in China, and when we’re both there at the same time, we end up attending some of the same meetings and at many dinners together. We’ve actually had a couple of REALLY wild times together out at the bars, spas and KTVs - including one time where I think we were both legit roofied because neither one of us remembers a huge chunk of one of our evenings.

ANYWAY. Two years ago, my boss stopped allowing me to go to Asia - he went instead of me and would attend my meetings and work on my development while he was there. Coincidentally, two years ago, JR stopped drinking for some unknown reason. Hm…. and now come to find out, two years ago JR’s little Junior was born in China! Hmmmmm!!!

Recently, I’d heard some buzz about how JR had a baby seat in his car, and I had no idea what people were talking about. Finally, one of the assistants blurted out the fact that JR got a woman who worked for a vendor pregnant and she had to stop working for the company and she had the baby and then JR had to get a divorce (duh) and then the vendor lady moved here to the US with the baby and they got married in Vegas about a month ago!!

So. That’s a LOT of secrecy around a guy who loves nothing more than to gossip about others, isn’t it?

Now. I’d heard about it around three weeks ago, I’d guess. And I hadn’t asked JR about anything because for as much as he loves to gab, if he hadn’t said anything to me about it, he clearly didn’t want to discuss it.

But our CEO just happened to be in the breakroom when JR and I were both grabbing a cup of coffee, and CEO started asking JR about little Junior in front of me…which meant that he had to tell me the story…which meant I had to act as if I had NO idea about the whole thing! That was weird.

But I’m glad it’s all out in the open because he and I have some things in common - his biracial son is almost the same age as my biracial niece and they have some of the same issues as it pertains to citizenship, etc. He actually has more pull than my brother does (and my brother is sort of clueless when it comes to red tape) so JR may actually come in handy!

Anyway. I need to end now and get some end of the day stuff done here at work. Just wanted to expound on that story.

Meanwhile, Mercury in retrograde is finally over. Good time to move things forward…

xox,
GS
