ON THE WALL in Postcards 4

George headed off to the Maker’s Place Sunday, and once again I headed for the beach.

There was a parking spot right at the sea wall, and the surf was roaring. The tide was out, and so even this unusually high surf only pounded the bottom of the pier. There was sea weed up on the sidewalk, and sea water in the street from the earlier high tide. There were crowds too. I love times like this.

The crowds stayed far, far away from the homeless man sleeping on top of the wall. I could have made him a far more interesting photograph, but I left it alone except for cropping.

  • Gratitude’s: George.

You remind me of how much I love the beach and of taking photos there, too. Who is Joseph Hansen? I'm off to do the dishes of two days now, myself.

He's a mystery writer. I like the worlds he creates.

When I see homeless people (especially in CA) I think of an episode of Lou Grant when relatives of a former editor of his want him to find their father who has disappeared in CA. He finds him living homeless - I think he's played by John Ireland - and the man does not want to go home. He is finally living a free life and he wants to stay free. I realize that is a romanticized view of homelessness but it has stayed with me all these years.

It is worrisome that so many homeless have little desire to get off the street. It becomes a way of life and one most of us do not understand . I respect their right to live in the manner they choose, but it bothers me when they trash the places they stay in . They trash our city library because they are allowed to squat there during the day and they are not respectful of it :-(

If the homeless man would look the other way he would have one of the best views in San Diego. Great editorial photo.
