Let's go shopping! in These titles mean nothing.

The first of today’s junk phone calls was from a credit card help place. They wanted to reduce my interest. But before I could quality I had to have a balance of $5000.

Honestly, it would kill me to spend $5000, but to please the voice on the phone I could consider it. So....

Let’s spend $5000.

I suppose that amount of money would fix the siding, replace the crown moldings over the windows, paint the house and install eave troughs. If I have any money left over I might consider some insulation.

There. That was easier than I thought.

Anyone care to work up an estimate for me?

========

I did spend some money last week. I bought myself a new toaster and a new coffee maker - both on the same day.

As close readers of my diary know my toaster was only toasting bread on on. e side, necessitating several trips to toaster for each toasting experience. I had to turn the pieces of bread around and retoast the untoasted side. Plus I had to pay attention so I would not toast the same sides twice. I mean it’s not rocket science, but it’s higher toaster operation.

Not sure if I’d told you but Mr. Coffee was getting recalcitrant. In other words, slow. His plumbing was getting plugged up and as cheap as I am I do not do the vinegar/water method of unplugging coffee pots. I have tried it in the past and found it only partially effective. And you have to do it over again right away anyway.

Since the kids were coming for the weekend and since they like to have a functioning coffee pot and a functioning toaster, I figured I should go shopping. I thought I would shop locally. I went to out small town’s version of a discount store and found them totally sold out of small size coffee pots.

So I decided to drive the 20 miles to the closest Walmart. I needed groceries too and that would make it a one stop trip (not counting the abortive attempt at shopping locally.)

This is where the story gets murky. I found either the coffee pots or the toasters first. I can’t remember. I think it was coffee pots. Anyway, either way, let’s assume coffee pots. They did not have the exact one I had had in the past, but I got the one that was the closest - a small cheap one. There was an even cheaper one but I thought do I want the cheapest coffee pot? I thought not. So I put the second cheapest coffee pot in my cart and went looking for toasters.

Toasters were a little like coffee pots. I wanted a simple cheap toaster. The cheapest was a cousin of the cheapest coffee pot. It was black, simply designed and cost eight dollars and change. I decided to get it.

Then I decided to go back and get the matching black simple cheapest coffee pot which was the same price. So now I have matching brand new counter appliances. Wonder if they make corn poppers? Then I’d really be stylin’.

It’s almost a week now and both toaster and coffee are working fine. I’m trying to keep them unplugged when not in use so they don’t burn the house down.

Robert doesn't like the way a toaster toasts, so we use a little toaster oven. But it's not toasting as well as it should, either, and if he wants more than two frozen waffles, I have to do it in two batches or squeeze them all in, which results in uneven toasting. I'd like a nice, 4-slice toaster, but I'm waiting until the toaster oven is toast.

Our toaster is getting really sketchy...the toast on one side thing. Our coffee pot was replaced about a year ago and with the current rate of use it will probably last another 6 months. I'm glad you have coordinated looking appliances. That is something I've never considered in making a purchase.

My brother just made up steaks and vegetables on the BBQ...so good!

You have shiny co-ordinated appliances now. Smart!

I suspect all of that work would be more than $5000, depending upon square footage of painting needed, the siding material (wood?) and window size and amount of repair needed. At least here where I live it would be more than 5K. Based upon my recent estimating experience.

Ahhh. Thanks.

I find that using filtered water makes the coffee pots last longer. I use the filter that attaches to the kitchen faucet.

I go on little binges where I shop for inexpensive appliances too. I didn't know I should leave them unplugged?
I did buy and instant pot from Amazon the other day. There was a flash sale and a 6 quart one came on for under $90 Canadian. I couldn't say no. :) It's still in a box in the middle of the kitchen floor. I'll probably never use it and give it to one of my girls. I do stupid things.

Turns out I leave them plugged in. Seems like I heard once that heat creating appliances could start a fire and I thought since these were cheap they might be more likely to do it. But who knows? I just googled and got a whole bunch of inconclusive info. Probable lots more dangerous things we do than leave cheap toasters plugged in. Wish us all luck.

Years ago my friends and I read about someone winning 150 million dollars from the lottery and we set out to build a spending plan for ourselves. We bought a building to live in and outfitted it with absurd technology. For 5000 dollars, I'd get a BBQ and new stove and fridge and dishwasher if that fit. I'm not sure how much appliances cost because living with my parents means I can't really just decide to get new stuff.

I love the simple joy of an upgrade, no matter how small. It's amazing how just that little boost can do wonders for your day, right?!
