Name: JOE (or, Jolly Old Elf…because that’s what he looks like!)
Introduction Platform: Bumble, but we’d also met once before in the lobby of my building…because he lives in the same building!
Age: 47
Relationship Status: Divorced not long. Maybe a few months? Three kids teenage kids.
Job: EVP of a private equity company that buys and sells tech companies
Lives: In my building
Length of Date: 1.5 hours
We Did: Met on the rooftop deck of our building, split a bottle of bubbly and talked
He Looked: Like a jolly old elf! In a good way! He’s really handsome, but seriously has this legit full-on gray beard, big bushy eyebrows, glasses, and he’s a tiny bit shorter than me. He dresses so exceptionally well I can see why I thought he might be gay when we met on the elevator that time (that I vaguely remember). He was wearing nice shorts, a rib knit kind of t-shirt-ish top and I don’t remember the shoes. Mostly, his beard is his distinguishing trait.
I Looked: I wore what I’d had on at work: black dress with flutter sleeves and a flutter skirt. I wore it belted and I’d changed my wedge sandals to flat sandals (not as cute, but I wore the flats to walk the dog earlier and just kept them on. Plus, the dog was with me on our “date”!)
Convo: The general get-to-know-yous, sprinkled with building sidebars and neighborhood discussions. He’s new to the building - as in, moved here a month ago - and there were many, many neighborhood quirks to discuss. He’s very, very well spoken and clearly very smart. ALSO! Earlier in the evening, when I took the dog out for a walk around the hood, I thought my iPhone had been stolen out of my purse! I’d been walking the dog with my purse open and the phone just kind of sitting there. While walking, I walked over a grate in the sidewalk, causing a Marilyn Monroe effect with my skirt. It seriously blew over my head! Some weirdo dude saw and made a move to cover his eyes like joking around that he hadn’t seen anything even though I know he saw my whole, full backside. I walked a little further and saw a friend of mine who was walking down the sidewalk with another friend and we chatted for about 5 minutes while crowds of people walked by. When we said goodbye, I turned to walk the other way to go home and about 5 minutes into the walk back I noticed my phone was gone out of my purse!! I knew I wouldn’t be able to finalize my plans with JOE without my phone (he said he’d text me when he was done with some friends he was meeting so we could meet on the rooftop). I basically RAN home and got on my computer to do a Find My iPhone search and to text JOE that my phone was stolen. The Find My iPhone feature showed me that my phone was still at the corner where my skirt blew up! I grabbed the dog and started walking back that way. At this point there was no one on that corner…the weird guy was gone! I figured he was the one who’d gotten it. But I walked into the corner store to see if maybe, maybe someone had turned in a phone. Sure enough, after I described my phone (tortoise shell case on an iPhone X), the manager pulled out my phone and handed it to me!!! He said a couple had seen it on the sidewalk and brought it in. Faith in humanity restored and I could go on with the evening. Anyway, I know that was a side story, but it was also one that I told JOE last night. We also talked travel (he travels a lot - for work and for his kids who live out of state), our varied career paths (he’s a former chef now tech guy), and my love of bubbly and his love of whiskey. We went on and on and finished the bubbles and he was respectful of my time and noted it was past my bedtime.
High Point: He made me want to see him again!
Low Point: None, really. Though I didn’t feel many sparks
How It Ended: We finished the bubbles and both agreed that we should do another rooftop rendezvous sometime soon, this time with whiskey. We also agreed that we should do this on Sunday night! We then went our separate ways from the rooftop (he lives on the opposite side of the building and we have two separate elevator banks, so we spit off on the rooftop).
Chances Are: See above - 100% on Sunday!
Date Rating: B, because it was nice, but again, not really date-y or spark-y
