A bit of scheduled downtime in Site Updates

Hey everyone,

More improvements are on the way! The developer will be working on the server this Wednesday at 10PM CST and the site will be in maintenance (mochi) mode. With luck things will go smoothly and we’ll be back in business in about an hour.

This update is an exciting one for me. This will build Docker functionality into the main server. That’s the tech I mentioned a few posts back that will allow us to easily spin up PB on another server if we ever need to, which should help safeguard us against a lot of possible issues. It’s been working well on the shiny new staging server, so now we press the big red ‘go’ button!

Mochi is suitably excited:

This is great but once again, I see no changes here yet. The site still sometimes runs slow and I see no new features. When will we have things like search features or be able to customize our backgrounds with pics of our own choosing and things like that?

Right now I'm prioritizing site stability and longevity over bells and whistles. They're in the pipeline though, don't you worry. All of this stuff takes time to do right.

New features are going to be built, but I ask for your patience while I work to build out a stable situation for the site that allows for the funding of new features while keeping things stable and running for the foreseeable future.

I'm not a developer like SM, I have to contract out to build new things. Think of it like hiring a roofer. And as I make the hard decisions on what will be worked on next, I'm trying my best to advocate for the long-term future of the community -- making sure the roof is stable rather than adding sparkles to the shingles.

But we'll get there, I'm working on it. The sparkles are coming :)

I'll be posting more on this soon.

Awesome! Thank you so very much, Josh! :)

Cool!

Mochi looks like me after a long weekend. LOL.

Thanks for the head's up, and thanks for focusing on stability and a solid structure before trying to throw on a bunch of shiny new bits (even though I know that's what everyone wants.) ;)

I have a question... but I'm not sure if you'll know the answer, because it may not be related to the site itself!

I've noticed that I have to re-sign into PB a lot more frequently than I used to. On my phone web browser and on my laptop's. It used to seem like I'd only have to re-sign in every time I switched to a different wifi network (going from work to home, etc.) but now (this began a few months ago probably? 6 months?), I will go on PB at home on my phone, and then an hour later load the page again, and have to sign in again. Did something change to cause this?

The only reason it's an annoyance to me is because we have to sign in with our email addresses and not our usernames - my email address is my full name, and my phone tries to autocorrect it every. single. time. Which doesn't sound like a big deal, but to have to type in my long email address, that my phone tries to auto correct every time, multiple times a night because I'm having to re-sign in...well, you get the picture. It's become a process and has resulted in me using PB less.

Any insight you have would be awesome!
Thanks :)
Kristen

Hi Kristen, have you seen this happen even when you check the box on the login screen to stay logged in? The site will automatically log you out after a certain amount of time for security reasons

sassafras josh ⋅ August 21, 2018

Yes! I re-check the "keep me logged in" box every time. It's so strange. At first I thought it was an issue with my own Wifi, but I've noticed it happens at my house, my girlfriend's house, at work, etc.

Consider using a password manager like LastPass. I see this periodically, but all it really means is clicking the "Log in" button, since LastPass has already filled in my credentials.

lessoff August 21, 2018

thanks for the updates :)

Silverstar46 August 21, 2018

Lol, sounds great and thanks again for all of your hard work! :)

Vivienne August 21, 2018

Thanks for the heads up!

I know there are lots of trade-offs here, including when the developer is willing to work, but I'll merely note that one of my west coast annoyances is companies on the east coast who set their maintenance period at midnight because no one will use their site then. It's only 9 PM for me, and annoying to hit something unusable when I want to check before bed.

Of course, you have users all over the world, so no time will be perfect. Out of curiosity, is 10 PM Central the lowest traffic time for Prosebox?

A heads-up is so different than the Open Diary under the reign of the absent Dairymaster that I have no idea why anyone would ever wanna go back.

middle age pearl August 21, 2018

Mochi has the right idea. We just need to chill and let the masters take care of business. Thanks!

Josh I totally love your dog

TellTaleHeart August 23, 2018

I got the Mochi maintenance screen for the first time the other night... and yet, no Mochi. I was doubly-sad.

I'm also not seeing the panda on the sad panda page, so I don't know what's up with that either. Today has been a very sad-panda-y day for some reason.
