After living, for 27 years as a black female in the world, I feel like I owe the world an apology. So here it is.
I’m sorry I’m black
Although I didn’t choose to be Black
I’m sorry that I’m a woman
Even though I didn’t choose to be one
I’m sorry I have an accent
I try my best to hide it
I’m sorry I’m not feminine enough
I suck at doing makeup, polishing my nails, doing my eyebrows
I’m sorry I suck at doing them but don’t have enough money to spend on them every two weeks
I’m sorry I don’t sing
I’m sorry I don’t dance
I’m sorry I’m goofy
I’m sorry I’m not pretty but wanting to and fail miserably
I’m sorry I’m fat I love to eat but hate exercising
I’m sorry for falling in love
I’m sorry for expressing myself
I’m sorry for trying so hard to fit in but can’t
I’m sorry for being old I should have stayed between the age of 18 and 26
I’m sorry for being single
I’m sorry he cheated on me
I’m sorry he rejected me
I’m sorry for being lonely, for seeking love and affection that I thought I deserve
I’m sorry for thinking that I deserve more
I’m sorry for being hurt when you look at me that way- you know the look, the one that makes me feel like I’m next to nothing, that I should just hide or die
I’m sorry for being myself- I should have been somebody else
I’m sorry for this poem it’s depressing but that’s how I feel.
I’m really sorry.
