5 refills not 5 pills! in A new beginning

I have some sort of chest cold brewing in me right now. I can feel something in my lungs and have really sharp pains in my chest and upper back when I breathe. Have a little cough but doesn't sound bad. I don't think there would really be anything they can do at this point other than a chest xray that will probably come back normal just like any other test I usually get. Probably just the respiratory MRSA. ha. Guess we'll see.

Was exhausted going into work again as usual with being up with Lilly most of the night and being extra tired with whatever the hell it is I have. I called out yesterday due to being in so much pain from my back, chest and a migraine and extreme nausea so you can imagine what my desk looked like this morning. Had 7 surgery charts, 40 referrals, 7 post op calls from last Thursday, two days worth of reschedules, voicemails, 50+ emails, my surgeons mail and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of other things. Needless to say, I was very productive today.

That dude that wanted to turn the metal that was excised from him into a necklace came in today. He kept saying my name pretty violently putting great emphasis on the "T" part in Kate. Weirdo. This woman was set up for a foreign body removal, (a splinter) so I naturally had to ask the MA if she was wanting to make a necklace out of it. She told me this one was sane so she didn't think she would but you never know.

One of my last calls of the day was a woman that just had surgery an hour before she called me. Probably was calling from the pharmacy. "Look, I just had a biopsy done and I was supposed to get FIVE REFILLS and all she gave me was FIVE PILLS!! I am supposed to take them every six hours and this isn't going to work" "Actually that is all she ever gives for that type of surgery because usually you don't end up needing it. You are only supposed to use it if you are having a lot of pain and you should be using ibuprofen with it if the pain seems to be worse. noticeably annoyed and shocked "So she doesn't EVER give refills? "No, she doesn't. If you are having a lot of pain a couple days after she may but that may mean something else is going on and she should see you" "Ok whatever then!"

Who in their right mind would give someone 5 refills of vicodin for a biopsy on a hand mass....or that many refills for anything for that matter? Nice try though. Kind of like the woman that called me the day after her trigger release surgery asking for a refill. " I don't know why she did this but she only gave me 10 vicodin and that ain't gonna get me through the weekend" "She only gives 10 because that is usually the amount you would need after that type of surgery and she doesn't give refills especially the day after surgery" "What?? this is ridiculous!! You're not even going to ask her???" "She is not in the office and if she was she would tell you to take ibuprofen". She ended up hanging up on me. I'm not usually that blunt with people but this woman had a history of being abusive with staff over narcotics so whatevs. I emailed my surgeon and gave her a heads up and she thanked me. That is one thing about the surgeon I work with. She is not one to hand out pain pills if she can help it. She has a high tolerance to pain you can tell. She has had two root canals and then came in a couple hours after to see patients and do surgery right after. She also has disc herniations and arthritis in her back so it's not like she doesn't know pain. People literally stub their toes and call in asking for oxycodone. Another surgeon I work with broke his toe this morning and was limping around on it all day seeing patients. It's funny to see the difference in how people handle things.

Weirdos is right! I can't believe all the stories you have from work. At least it's never boring lol.

Hope your cold goes away soon. We have had quite a few of them lately too.
