First time in Stuff

Mercer, Harrison, and I went to see a movie last night. We’ve been off our schedule with weekend movies lately because of the constant barrage of stormy weather. But we made it out for an evening film at least.
After it was over I made my way to the restroom and Mercer followed me inside. This was a first. To be fair, I’ve never fully understood the need for men and women to use different restrooms in public places. The idea of doing that in your home seems absurd, but we’ve all just come to accept it as normal in public.
But now that Mercer identifies as female, I suppose it’s only natural that she would use the women’s restroom in public. We walked in together. There were four total stalls, the two on the ends were being used and the two in the middle were available, so we went into those, side by side. I’m not sure why it felt awkward like that, but it did. Probably just because it’s the first time that it’s happened, and I’ll eventually get used to it.
I should make it clear that not much about Mercer looks female in the way we normally think of what a woman looks like, which I realize is really nebulous these days anyway. But she dresses in women’s clothes more and more and is trying to be more feminine with her hair and makeup.
But I also know that in the transgender world (Megan has taught me a lot) there’s the concept of being “passable,” which is in reference to whether or not a person can pass as the gender that he or she identifies. Mercer definitely doesn’t pass as female. I imagine she eventually will, but not at the moment.
There’s no climax to that story. Nothing really happened. We used the restroom and then we left and went home. It was just noteworthy to me that we used the same one for the first time.
