Last night I attended a fundraiser for an old friend who had a stroke on Thanksgiving day. It was apparently a very severe stroke - the guy is 49 years old and very, very active. He has no medical insurance.
The day after it happened I started seeing a GoFundMe.com set up for him and had to click around to actually find out what had happened to him. I only found out through notes I found on Facebook. It was Day 2 of the GoFundMe page, and he’d already gotten $38K of the $50K goal! Today, the page shows $55K has been raised, and the goal has been updated to $100K. The man is beloved in this town.
To prove that, a few folks got together to put a fundraiser together, and about a dozen independent high-end restaurants volunteered their time and delicious food; several artists auctioned off their art; fashion designers put together a mini-fashion show and many, many other places donated spa days, vacations and such. It was a blow out!
Hundreds of people showed (at $75 + a bottle of wine entry fee per person), and the man himself got a couple of hours release from the hospital to make an appearance!
Tears and laughter, joy and sorrow. It was simply amazing to be a part of this event.
Like I said, I went solo, but I saw a few people I know. The honoree knows nearly EVERYONE who’s anyone in the hotel, service and retail industries in this city. He’s an icon.
So I mingled and chit-chatted, but I did meet several folks I’d never met before and everyone was so wonderful.
Including Clifford, a tall and thin drink of water who looks about all of 20 years old. I don’t even remember how it started, but he approached me and before I knew it we were talking and talking…about everything!
Come to find out, he’s 43 and from what I can tell from a first meeting, he’s very smart, pretty successful and (hopefully), not a nut job! He’s not really like what I normally go for - not super flashy or salesman-y (though he does work in sales and he does dress nicely). Not what I normally go for with regards to looks…like I said, he’s thin and looks so much younger than he really is (though, the Tree looked younger, too). We are not the same race, but that matters not. He lives close. He’s super nice and polite.
We’ll see. He’s on a business trip now, so we texted about maybe going out when he’s back.
I know I’m jumping the gun here, but I just wanted to report that I actually met another someone ORGANICALLY, and that’s what has me very excited. I met someone new while I was out doing something that I really love and care about.
And THAT’S what it’s all about!
If something more comes of this lovely meeting, you KNOW you will be the first to know. But until then, I’m going to keep getting out and doing the things I love and hopefully will meet more new lovelies this way - not just MEN, but beautiful people who bring light back into my life.
Happy Monday.
