It's Saturday but these days that doesn't mean what it once did, even up to last August. To most it means the work week is finished and the weekend means many things, cleaning, getting groceries , shopping , a few drinks with friends or sports events, the freedom to stay up later and sleep in to make love slowly with the love and emotion that gets put aside during the hurried week. Some go to the cottage for the weekend, visit sick or old relatives, or attend family celebrations. So many ways it's impossible to write them down, the ways people enjoy free weekend time. To me , up until last fall, it meant that I had free time to do as I pleased because during the week I looked after my grand daughter pretty much everyday. Even days she went to preschool I got up with her, fed her, got her ready, took her to school and picked her up but parts of the day were mine. I don't have my own car anymore so I am restricted a little in where and when I can take off but I did get to go to a couple of places that were important to me. I went to University level classes brought to us free through the local Universities and churches volunteering their time which was wonderful! I always wanted to go back to University and just enjoy learning , discussions with professors and peers but couldn't really afford to anymore and this was a dream come true. The program was put on by an organization called Humanities 101. Someday I'll write about how it was developed. Through it not only did we study the classics through art, history, literature etc. but got to go to art galleries, operas and plays too. The best thing I learned though was that I could still learn, could keep up and just enjoyed meeting the other students just like me. The proffs were great and enjoyed teaching people who were eager to learn, discuss and question as opposed to half asleep students that googled everything , and listened to their Ipods all through class. lol The other place I enjoyed was to go to a knitting group hosted by our local immigration support organization where women for all over the world met, knit or did needlework and helped with languages but most importantly it was something we all knew and felt a kinship for. We made little hats and booties for preemie babies, blankets for kids in refugee camps and hats and mitts for them as well. You put a bunch of women together from anywhere and they will find a way to help others. Well, that's it for today, my grand daughter came and interrupted me in the middle of my note and now it's 1 am so I'm off to bed to read for a bit.
