Long Islanders 6/12/2001
I frequently go onto college discussion boards, like the ones on www.review.com and www.bolt.com. I'm getting pretty offended to tell you the truth. One of the threads on the message board asked, "What are your greatest fears about your future roommate?" A little less than half replied they were afraid that they would get a roommate from L.I.
What the hell? People can't generalize like that. That's like saying "Everyone in Kentucky is a hillbilly," or "Everyone in Alabama hates black people and is involved in the KKK." Yes, there are definitely such rich parts on Long Island, but that doesn't make the entire population a bunch of snobs!
I hate to break the snobby-Long-Island-people myth, but when I went to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, the residents were the rudest bunch of people I'd ever met. My roommate Natalie and I were walking down street one day when we crossed a street without looking. Granted, that was our fault, but the light had just turned green when we stepped onto the curb. It's not like we delayed traffic or caused any accidents. This woman starts driving alongside us and starts screaming out a window, "What the [expletive]! I'll have you arrested! Give me your names so I can bring them to the police! (Yes lady, I'm going to give you my name so you can get me in trouble). How can you walk across the street! I was just about to hit the gas! Next time I will hit you! (Blah blah blah). Natalie was laughing pretty hard (I mean, c'mon, if this woman was in such a rush, why was she wasting time screaming at two kids?) while I just kind of remained quiet until Psycho Woman sped off, while nearly crashing into another car, ironically. When my parents were coming to pick me up, they had gotten lost and had stopped a man to ask for directions. This woman passing by, who my parents weren't even speaking to, yells "Fend for yourselves!" And you call Long Islanders snobby? Please! We just have a bad rep because of the Hampton people. Grr. Sorry, had to vent :o)
