Psychology of Thought 2/13/2001
Hey Internet
Mrs. Montgrey (she was mentioned before in the "Assorted Ramblings..." entry.) held a class discussion today in AP English Composition. She asked us if words correctly conveyed our thoughts. I said no because words seem to minimize how we feel. Such as, in my previous entries, I don't believe saying "I feel scared" adequately conveys how I'm feeling. It makes my worries sound trite (and maybe to you they are) but to me, it doesn't fully show how I feel. Then she asked us another interesting question: Do you think in language (words) or do your thoughts appear as pictures? I said that my thoughts appear in pictures. I had always assumed that everyone else thought in pictures like I did. To my surpise, most people thought in words. She followed up with a third interesting question: Is thinking in words or pictures better, and how does it affect the way we express ourselves? Well, I would think that thinking in pictures is better than thinking in words because it's much more entertaining, and my thoughts/pictures in my head has always been the main source of my creativity. Do you know that technically, thinking in words is better, because it arranges your thoughts better, helps you speak better, which in turn, helps you convey your emotions better? Whereas when you think in pictures, you have a harder time speaking and trying to convey what you're thinking because you're trying to describe a picture in your mind that others can't see. I've always had a problem speaking; I don't have a serious speech impediment, but I'm always pausing, or going back and correcting what I said, and I have a horrible habit of saying "and whatever" and "you know what I mean?" I just thought that the reason I never could seem to speak as well as my sister was because she's an English major, and well, she has to speak and write well. Most of my friends are brilliant, or at least very intelligent, and I always figured they were just smarter than I was, which is why they spoke better. I just thought that today's conversation in class was so interesting. I love finding out why things are the way they are; picking people's brains fascinates me. In college, I would love to take some psychology courses...Anyway, I'm off to dream in my wonderful world of pictures. Goodnight ODers.
Until next time
