Assorted Ramblings from a Confused Mind 1/16/2001

One of my friends once told me that the worst things a girl has to go through is childbirth. I disagree-I think it's having to take phys ed. No, wait, hear me out.Think about this for a second. The gym teachers that are portrayed on tv are uncaring, mean, rude, and uneducated. Well, it's not far from the truth. The gym teachers in my school make it sound like gym is absolutely imperative to being successful in life. And if you're good at stupid things like chemistry, bio, calculus, English, history...well, then that's ok too. Don't they realize that on no college application (or at least very few) will the school ask you, "Artist, can you play volleyball well? How about basketball? No? Well, despite your A average, good standardized scores, and numerous extracurriculars, we just can't accept you into our school." NEWS FLASH--THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN UNLESS YOU WANT A SERIOUS SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP!!!! I mean, give me a break. And the people that are in my gym class are absolutely ridiculous. They act as if you've killed the Pope if you miss a serve. They REALLY scream at you. And yet, these are the same kids that have to stay in high school another year because they're failing, or they're going to graduate, but they're in all of the remedial classes. But hey, they have a great serve, so therefore, they must be better than me...My stupid teacher put me on the most meanest volleyball team ever. The girls will smack you if you miss a serve, literally, and the boys say just horrible things... They're that crazy about winning. They're not even that good. I mean, they're good, but no-one's going to be banging down their door for a scholarship. So I asked my teacher to switch me to another team and he asks, "Why should I switch you?" So I answer, "Well, the people on that team are really snobby, and very competitive, and they get really upset when you miss a serve. " He looks at me and says, "Too bad. Don't miss." I'm telling you, I almost walked out. The only power he has is terrorizing people who are thirty years younger than he is. And while I'm at a good college, and getting a good job, he's going to still be sitting in my crummy school, swinging that stupid whistle around his finger. There are some days I feel like I'm ready to run to college.

So...back to Becca. My jealousy is aroused once again. I just got a really good paying job ($1200 for six weeks--I'm going to be a camp counselor). So, Becca is referred by her sorority sister to apply to this other camp in this really ritzy area. Not only does Becca get the job, of course, but she gets paid $2400, plus tips. And she couldn't be a camp counselor...no, not Becca. She's a camp supervisor, the boss of the camp counselors. And get this...she's never had any experience with kids, other than with her siblings. They only gave her the job because she's friends with Jamie, the sorority sister, who's loved by this camp. I'm telling you, no matter how hard I work, no matter what I do, Becca is always better...

I also discovered that teachers weren't so bad. This one English teacher I have, Mrs. Montgrey, is really strict. I never really got along with her and I've always thought that she really disliked me. Anyway, so I had to hand in an English portfolio. The cover letter to this portfolio could be anything I wanted...funny, serious, whatever. It was the only thing in the portfolio that I could decide what to write about. So, I made this very funny, very creative, very unique cover letter. After class, my friend Kara had taken me aside and said, "While you were reading your cover letter in class, Daniella's portfolio was open to her cover letter and she had the exact same thing as you." Now, if you knew my techer you would understand why I flipped out. My teacher is the type of person to fail both students when she sees plagarism, even if one student had nothing to do with it. I worked soooooooooo hard on my portfolio, and now I would fail because Daniella stole my cover letter. I went up to Mrs. Montgrey later in the day, crying, and said, "Look, I have no proof that Daniella stole my cover letter, but we have the same one. I have friends that helped me come up with the idea and saw me write it if you need any proof. I don't want to get penalized, so I'll write another cover letter if you want, but don't penalize me because of Daniella." Mrs Montgrey said, "Artist, I saw you working very hard on your portfolio and I know you put a lot of effort into it. Don't worry about anything you won't be penalized." She was so sweet and so comforting. She has officially earned a place on my Awesome People list. Very few of my teachers are nice people and I didn't realize that Mrs. Montgrey was so nice...The rest of the day seemed brighter because of her kindness. I know she'll probably (hopefully) never read this but I just want to say Thank You... People don't suck so bad after all. Until my next entry...
