That Would Be Something in Everyday Ramblings

After I got all worked up (about the various unflattering whining going on out there in the world by men who are using it as an attention grabbing device and acting like they are victims when they are in fact victimizers) I went for a walk.

I have posted a picture of this relatively modern totem pole that sits at a viewpoint up behind my place before but I did take this picture Tuesday late afternoon.

The reason in my way of thinking that it is interesting that I came upon it when I did was as I was walking up I was listening to a couple of lectures on the deep history of the Indian subcontinent (think tectonic plates banging into each other) and it’s people who are now grouped together and called Adivasi or indigenous peoples. And about how the Indian government currently handles the idea of representation of these people in health, education and government.

I still haven’t quite finished my Philosophy lecture series, or the one on the history of the Eastern Steppe or the History that affected the creation of many Classical Music pieces (I loved loved the pocket summary of the whole Wagnerian Ring Cycle and found resonances with current political activities) or the one on Symphonies but I wanted something a little different.

And of course as I go deeper into the history and teachings of modern yoga I touch on many things I don’t understand.

Audible had a two for one sale on The Great Courses and I got one on the history of India and one on the history of the Middle East.

Ah, the life of the mind…

Today is the last of the really hot days forecasted. It has been quite the slog. Yesterday the air quality was so bad even I didn’t want to go out.

Recovery from surgery (and coming off steroids), the weather, cutting back on caffeinated drinks, the lack of enthusiasm for my day job all conspired to make me get home yesterday afternoon, feed the cats and crawl under a light blanket and pass out.

I did find out something interesting yesterday in terms of this idea of victimhood much to my chagrin. My salary at work has been frozen for about 3 ½ years and based on what I had been told at the time I was up against a salary cap that also precluded cost of living increases.

So I have been whining about this, salary stagnation and I was talking to Most Honorable a few weeks ago as his institution and mine have much in common and he is also in a salary freeze, or was, but he said he was getting cost of living increases so I decided to investigate.

And lo and behold. I just got a 2.5% increase two weeks ago. It still seems a pittance compared to the increase in food and housing prices going on around here but still I declare I will whine no more!

I only have two more days of antibiotics (for which I am incredibly grateful) and then I can settle into a more natural healing routine. I’ll get some of my stitches out next Thursday and am looking forward to having that done.

We’re going for some sort of hike tomorrow. And! Don’t tell anyone, we don’t want to jinx it; it is supposed to rain Sunday.

That would be something.

Is that your last surgery? I know you are ready to be done with all of it. I think businesses use this whole "salary freeze" excuse just to make more money off the backs of the workers. Which is seriously demoralizing and I think in the long term hurts the company more than helps...you don't want bitter employees representing you in the workplace. Oh well.

Yes, this was the last one! I still have a couple of procedures left but last week was it. :)

There's a totem pole in Asheville that's always fascinated me - it's near the university and has been since I was a kid. I think it's something to do with a scout headquarters. I love Audible! I had a free trial and then cancelled after it ran out since it seemed awfully pricey, but when I get through all the lectures I stocked up on, I may join again. I've been doing mostly English history ones, but have some music and literature ones too.
