A Whole New World in Everyday Ramblings

One thing that may seem confusing to folks that live somewhere where winter weather is expected and normal and folks are prepared for it is that here in Portland when it snows it is a very very big deal.

It is snowing now.

One of the main issues we have with snow is that the temperature just kisses freezing and then we get snow and then the temperature rises and we get just enough of a melt that when it drops again everything out there is coated in ice.

We never get cold cold; just cold enough to make things treacherous. We had warning of this. You might even say excessive warning. Saint Joe and me decided yesterday that we were both working from home today.

He rode his motorcycle over the slippery Sellwood Bridge yesterday morning to come into the office and that made me slightly insane. Behind closed doors I asked Nimrod if he at least could work from home today and not risk the roads and in the end all of us with Telecommute setups were encouraged to work from home today.

I canceled my class last night as we had high high winds and there were patches of black ice.

Luckily Most Honorable was able to stay home today and grade the finals he gave yesterday.

I was scheduled to get my first crown in this batch of dental work on Tuesday. That will complete the work on one implant. They called as I was walking to class Monday evening to say the lab had not completed the job and scheduled me an additional two weeks out.

It was disappointing way out of proportion to the inconvenience.

I was on my way to talk to my coordinator at the church about finances and the future and the new studio and…

Luckily I was teaching material I was familiar with later.

People in cars and trucks are not being able to get traction up the hill in front of my place.

This whole week is off kilter. Tuesday was our first power flextime in the winter season. In my case they ask us to use as little power as possible in three-hour blocks in the evening.

It was above freezing so I went to the gym and then came home and played with the cats in the dark. I didn’t turn the heat down. But still I used 36% less power and got a workout in.

Tonight is another flextime. I’ll be staying home. I will charge up all my electronic devices and then turn all the lights off but one and get into bed with stuff to read and Clara (my hot water bottle) and a light hot chocolate and while away the evening.

That is what one does on snow days. At least here.

It is sad about John Glenn. It is a whole new world out there for our descendents.

Stay warm, cozy, and safe.

John Glenn is from my state, hearing a lot about him.

We have no snow at the moment but I'm pretty sure by Saturday morning we should be getting 2".

Sometimes we get bunches of snow ; blizzards, ice storms , even tornadoes in the winter . The climate here is bizarre! Other times it can be quite mild or flood ... Right now it is frigidly cold :-(
